Now Marshall (MH) has 'speak language' as a class skill, so I'd like to utilize this by learning a number of extra languages. (I’m pretty much going to be the ‘face’ of the party in social encounters) I talked it over with the DM and he doesn’t really like the idea of a character ‘suddenly’ knowing a language (by paying a skill point) without some role-playing involved. I agree it does seem rather weird having someone instantly ‘know’ a language without being exposed to it somehow. On the other hand, I don’t think it should be that much harder to attain when compared to a regular skill-increase, as that would severely penalize a seldom used non-combat skill. We have agreed to think it over independently and see what we can come up with prior to the next session. Ideas so far (DM approved) include; Buying a dictionary of the language in question and study it in game. Probably around 10gp a pop, hours required not yet decided. Get an NPC to work with you. Say, capture a goblin to learn ‘goblin’ or pay a town-NPC for lessons. Time required not yet decided. I’d like to know what means other groups use to explain this type of character developments in-game. |

Slight problem there, we don't have a wizard in the party, so this is the first time this something like this has come up. I've realized this may not be the appropriate section for this question, so I reposted in the ‘What’s a DM to do’.
