I have devised a system (after looking at D20 modern's action point system) that keeps the game in the players hands. Hope you enjoy.

Each player starts the campaign with a set number of "Cool Points", usually 2 per player. At the end of each session 2 new points are awarded for good role playing, doing something cool in game, buying pizza for the night, or whatever. I award one as DM to the player i believe deserves it the most, and then the players vote to give out the second one.

The way the system works is that in a game players use their points to make certain sequences more cinematic, as well as in their control (which I find players really like. Having control outside of the luck of the dice) A usual use of the points is a player spending 1 coll point to guarantee the next roll is a natural 20, be it for an attack, a check, or whatever. this also allows the player to dictate how the action resolves (swinging onto a just to high ledge after kicking a bad guy from a swinging rope, for example.) More outlandish shots might call for more than 1 point, but that is up to the indavidual DM. Players can also pool their points to come up with cool, multi person choreographed and coordinated attacks simultaneously, which can be particularly entertaining during epic boss fights.

Any thoughts on this system?

Heya,

Sounds like Action Points on steroids! Seems a little over the top in the effects but I like the idea. Why not just elaborate the Action Points variant from UA a little? They are there exactly to make things more "heroic" and "hollywoodish" but they seem more balanced.

Yep. That about sums it up. Didn't know it though. Talk about reinventing the wheel... [/sheepish]

Be advised, like any 'reward' system it stands a high chance of causing players to min/max this too. Each trying to outdo each other to get the extra nibblet.

This can be fun but you need to monitor that it doesn't become an in-group source of contention.
