My GM wanted rules for holding a weapon to somebody's throat, which he called covering. He asked me to design the rules and a feat to enhance them. What do people think of the following? Also, is there a better term than "Covering"? I dislike how similar it is to obstructions providing a +4 AC bonus...

Step 1: Hold an action to attack.
Step 2: For a standard action, move 5 feet into their square, provoke an att-op.
Step 3: Spend a standard action each round to maintain.

While covering, you can respond to any action by attacking your victim, who is denied dex from your attack.

If your covering weapon attacks, is disarmed, is sundered, or you are grappled, you lose your cover. If you are distracted (concentration or fort to avoid, varying DC's), you must make an opposed initiative check to make your held attack before the action(s) that trigger it.

Oh, and there's a feat. Quick summary:
No att-op, +5 bonus to concentration checks (to avoid distratction while
covering), and +1d6 sneak attack (only while covering).

There was a thread about rules for that type of situation once on these boards, and some of the posters were of the opinion that you were effectively threatening a coup-de-grace when you were holding your sword/knife/etc to someone's throat. I liked that way of looking at it, because otherwise there's a much too good chance that you'll be able to slip away with nothing more than a little scratch.
