Has anyone used the craft points varient?

the idea of needing feats to make masterwork items seems rather ridiculous to me.

the way they are broken down, feat for melee weapons, a feat for ranged weapons, and a feat for armor and a feat for alchemy?

even with the feat and the skill ranks you still can fail at making something.

to me it is easier to make magic weapons than masterwork weapons!

1 feat and a caster level and no dice rolls

according to this my 10th level wizard with 13 ranks in craft alchemy and the skill focus (craft alchemy) feat can now make nothing (since he does NOT have the craft alchemy items feat)!

Then just drop those feats.

Reading it though more carefully, the second paragraph in the second column on page 97: "To spend craft points toward the creation of an alchemical, masterwork, or magic item, you must have the requisite Craft feat. . . ."

I think that could justly be interperted as you can still create alchemical items, but you must take the full time to do it. If you wanted to be able to use craft points to create your tanglefoot bag you'd have to take the feat.

We used it a couple of times and never thought it meant you needed to take a much more specific feat to create an item. Everyone gets craft points regardless of class. We just assumed that if you had the necessary feats and skills to create an item normally, you could use your craft points to make it faster. You still use gold and XP in item creation and the number of craft points you get is limited. Why make it harder on the players by making them burn feats on it? The idea was to make crafting items a viable option on campaigns that lacked lots of downtime. So that's exactly what we used it for.

Actually that still is true for magic items but the feats in question pertain to non-magical items such as alcemeic items and masterwork items which are supposed to be created using the applicable craft skill.

UA has added the need to have a feat to craft masterwork items as well.

UA is entirely optional. You can pick and choose whatever best suits your campaign. :)

Wizard IMC just started using the Craft System. He picked up Craft Wonderous Item, but the party never stopped long enough for his to scirbe scrolls into his spellbook, let alone make anything.

SO, *ta da*, I showed him the Craft rules, and he loves them! In fact, I house rules that he could spend 100 craft points to add a spell from a scroll into his book. Since then, he has not bothered the rest of the party and they are totally digging the fact that the wizard is not always saying, "Okay guys, time for a week off."

The masterwork feats are kind of useless - except for certain NPC's. But they do give you more Craft Points. Up to you!
