crit hit and vitality(VP) [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-23-06, 02:51 PM a crit hit bypasses vitality(VP) and goes to wound points(WP). what if the monster has no VP? the crit is "wasted". no special effect happens. or does sneak attack and special weapon damage inflict rolled damage instead of 1 point/die?(pg. 117 UA) :confused:

Creatures who have nothing but WP take only WP damage; in the case of a critical, since they normally are not subject to criticals, they take normal WP damage (of which they have much more), while they are not subject to sneak attacks and thus take no SA damage. ;)

01-23-06, 09:41 PM sorry, i meant "has no VP left". my point is crits seem to have no special effect when VP runs out. :confused:

01-23-06, 10:26 PM Well being versed in SW(which is where the VP/WP system was produce) I think I've got a good fix for you(in SW a crit will normally decimate you[because most of the time you facing a 3d8 blaster rifle or a 3d6 blaster pistol] so having no VP left didnt mean a crit was softened). Add one dice of damage when you roll a crit if the target of the Crit has no VP left. This way it accounts for the virtual negation of "No VP left crits" without making it too powerful.

01-24-06, 04:39 AM WOW!! Slow down; aren't critical hits supposed to simply trump right over to WP!? Am I the only one who simply sees that there's a misunderstanding?

When you are dealt a critical hit, you take an amount of WP damage instead of VP; the same occurs if you have no VP left. In other words, there is no such thing as a problem when the character has no VP, as that factor is not taken into account.

01-24-06, 07:23 AM Once a character runs out of VP, every hit is effectively a critical. There's no reason to make it worse.
