I'm a fighter wielding a scythe, giving an X4 crit. which seemed great to me certainly in the light of the fact that our party didn't roll to confirm crits. Recently, we've reinstated the crit-threat rules and, for all my attacking i haven't crit. once since then. Regardless, it has kind of relegated my character to the role of a tank, pumping up my AC with improved combat expertise and I must say I'm personally quite loathe to be in my position. That was all filler to the reason though, I wanted to create a system which didn't require one to roll against opposed AC for a crit, but didn't allow one to crit. fully automatically, thus being a bit of a compromise. So here it is: Upon a crit. threat roll 1d3, a roll of 3 will hence be called a high roll, 2 a medium, and 1 a low roll. A high roll deals full crit. multiplier, whatever it is. A medium, subtracts one multiplier from the full crit. multiplier. A low subtracts 2 multiplier from the full crit. multiplier, and cannot go below a X1 modifier. I was just thinking about this as a variant rule, and just wanted to throw it out for input. The way I see it, it puts more worth to weapons with higher crit. multipliers, which I want, but mediates the damage upon a crit, which serves some of the function of a crit threat. Edit: A note also that effects that activate upon a Critical hit, only activate on a High roll on the d3. |

Take Improved Critical, get your weapon enhanced with keen, or pick a weapon with a bigger crit range, you whiner. :D Anyways, this usage favors high-end criticals (like yours), and severely impacts low-end. I would not allow it. |

Pick up the great hammer (or whatever it's called) from MM4. 19-20x4. It's also high damage. I'm still not sure how it's not broken. |
