| mecket09-15-05, 06:29 PM | Hi.Iīm was reading some of the threads here and woul like to share and listen to opinions of my change in D&D. This sistem was created in the beggining to simulate racial h.d to humanoids races because I hate the ideia of people born into classes instead of learning how to be a menber of the class(just to note I know that people didnt really born into class in D&D but the rules didnīt suppot that!seens like everyone have born into the class they choosed),but in the end I have changed so much that it really deserve some attention(good or bad I dont know :P ). Well just to start every member of a humanoid race have levels of strong, fast, though, smart, dedicated or charismatic hero (classes of D20 modern),so the npcs classes(commoner, expert and noble) are extint now. The classes of D&D (except by druid and paladin)will become advanced classes that can be picked after the first level.Sorcerer will be changed to warlock.wizard and cleric can add their levels of smart(wizard)or dedicated(cleric) to their levels for the porposes of spell by day/know. Druid and paladin will became pretige classes manly because of their restriction and especilyty in their chosen field(and if I remenber well after those years druid was just a example of a especialized cleric based of the celtic druids like merlin in AD&D so now nothing more fair than turn then into prestige classes ;) ) Magic will be handled a litle diferent:smart and dedicated hero can learn arcane and divine magic but it will be more difficult and harder to learn and cast spells than wizard and cleric(I created 2 new talents see below).Besides that every spell cast have the potential of hurting or tiring the spellcaster and even fail.To simulate this I use the Spell point sistem of unearthed arcana, besides that when casting a spell every spellcaster have to make a spellcraft check(DC 10+spell points expend)or lose the spell and the spell points.Even if the spell is cast the spellcaster have to make a fortitude check(dc5+minimum level to cast the spell+1 for every spell after the first cast whitout a minute of rest),if fail the caster became fatigued ,future fails gives the caster -2 constitution penalty (cumulative)until the caster rest for a full day. Ex:If a smart1/wizard6 want to cast a fireball (7 SP,minimum level to cast 5)he will have to make a spellcraft check at Dc17, and a fortitude check Dc10, if he wants to cast another fireball whitout rest the fort check wil raise to 11,etc ,etc. Just to adress at possible questions I like to keep the defense bonus(now C.A bonus)and action points that the classes of D20 modern grants because that help to explain the miracles and dominance of humanoids races in the D&D worlds. Now to finish the 2 new talents: Arcana Knowledge(smart hero) You can learn and cast arcane spells like a wizard of your level in the smart hero class. You receive however just half the Sp a wizard receives and have a +2 in all Dcs in Spellcraft and fortitude checks when casting arcana spells.Spellcraft is now a class skill for you. Special:If you ever gains a level in wizard class you lose the DC penalty when casting wizard spells. Choosen By the High Powers(dedicated hero) You have atracted the atention of a patrone god or spirit. You can now cast divine spells like a cleric of your level in the dedicated hero class. You can not choose domains, and receives only half the SP a cleric would receive. All the spellcrafts and fortitude checks when casting spells have the DC increased in +2.Spellcraft is a class skill for you now. Special:If you ever gains a level in cleric class you lose the DC penalty when casting cleric spells. Thatīs it! Any Coments you be apreciated ;) ! Cheers C P.s:sorry if I made some errors when writing this text .English is not my first language,so please be patient :P |
| Ranger REG09-15-05, 08:00 PM | Google "Classically Modern" and "Merlin's Workshop." Also, you might want to read Urban Arcana. |
| sindar09-16-05, 02:45 AM | Yup you want Classically Modern, already did what you want to do and did it pretty well (now I like D20 modern ). |
| mecket09-16-05, 05:52 PM | Thanks Ranger REG and sindar :) Sorry for the delay(I having some internet problems right now :embarrass ).Iīm downloading "Classically Modern" right now^^ .I have Urban Arcana but since I didnīt enjoied the Scenary I skipped the rules part(I brought the book only because of the dark elves :embarrass ). After read those I will give my opinion. :D Thanks again C |
| Ranger REG09-17-05, 03:15 AM | Scenery? You're not one of them loud opposition crying "Shadowrun ripoff!" ... are you? |
| sindar09-17-05, 03:59 AM | One thing about Classically Modern Read it carefully it's a good system but it's Genric classes can be a little hard to understand |
| Xeviat-DM09-17-05, 04:14 PM | They're not born into their class. Addolecent creatures (human 10 to 14) have half the racial hit dice of their parents, and juviniles (human 5 to 9) have one quarter. Having no racial hit dice, the human base class is Commoner. A commoner is, essentially, half a warrior with worse proficiencies. So, with already having half a hit die essentially, you can't really split that anymore; when someone takes fighter, they'll more than welcome giving up that commoner hit die they were born into. I just think it's funny that a Bugbear commoner has to exist somewhere; or do commoners only come about in civilized society? |
| mecket09-18-05, 07:56 AM | Hi sorry for taking so long for answer(I only have some minutes right now :embarrass );first thanks a lot for showme the Merlins Workshop.I liked a lot but Iīm taking a diferent aprouch in my games. Now about Urban Arcana :I didnt like the scenary not because is a copy of shadowrun(to say the truth I barely remenber this game since been years nothing was be released here in brazil for it), but simple because I was hopimg for more intrigue and not a action scenary^^.Besides it doesnt have enough drow ;) (the only reason for my to brought it was because of the drow in the front :P ) . Xeviat-DM I know abou this rule, but like I try to say, what I was tryng to do was create a sistem to simulate a racial HD that can show the high diferences betwen the humanoids since not everyone is a hero,(ie have pc class), if you look at it you will see that a commoner dont have the skills and variety that can put a race in top.Not everyone in a D&D world is a fighter or mage, but if you simple pass to call the D20 modern classes racial hd to humanoids and allow the use of action points and such you will see that whith this simple sistem a simple 1hd humam or dwarf can do a miracle or two if REALLY needed , I really like the ideia of a bunch of humans fighting ogres to defend their villages and winning! They will still be below the heros of the world(the pcs)but they will be so much more different betwen thenselves, so unpredictable to non-humanoids^^ Just my :twocents: Cheers C |
| Ranger REG09-18-05, 07:03 PM | Now about Urban Arcana :I didnt like the scenary not because is a copy of shadowrun(to say the truth I barely remenber this game since been years nothing was be released here in brazil for it), but simple because I was hopimg for more intrigue and not a action scenary^^.Besides it doesnt have enough drow ;) (the only reason for my to brought it was because of the drow in the front :P ) . :uh-huh: So what's your point? It's not like the Shadowrun publisher is going to publish a d20 version anytime soon. |
| mecket09-19-05, 04:46 PM | :uh-huh: So what's your point? It's not like the Shadowrun publisher is going to publish a d20 version anytime soon. MY point is that I didnt even think about shadowrun when I read the scenary, I didnt like it because theres just not enough intrigue to pick me^^. I love scenarys full of history and intrigue like dragonlance and here in brazil theres just not enough scenarys of D&D avaliable.Just to give a example:the cronicles of dragonlance just are ben brought here and we still are waiting for a translated version of the campaing book^^. I didnt even know about drizzīt before entering n this boards, I like drow because of a homebrew campain I played 5 years ago, when I brought the book I simple was waiting for some drow scenary in the modern world :embarrass . So just to resume :Urban Arcana is a great book about all the things of D&D in a modern world...but I simple wanted lots of drow :P Cheers C P.s:about the rules in the book I have to agree that they are very good for my ideia of a campaing^_^ I simple want a option whith Spell points(maybe psionics?) thanks all for you GREAT help :D |
| Ranger REG09-20-05, 04:43 AM | I dunno. It's intriguing enough for me. No backstory. No "Aragorn" or "Gandalf" clone iconic figures to feel second-place. No pressure to make epic-style adventures. Spell points? Urban Arcana is not what you want, where it stays true to d20 Modern core rules. You need the big book of variant rules, aka Unearthed Arcana. |
