| jamie_noone08-27-05, 09:37 PM | I hate Vancian casting, so I really like the sound of Andy Collins' "Daily Spell List" variant on pg 153 of Unearthed Arcana. But I'm not satisfied with his suggested means to compensate sorcerers for making them obsolete, so I'm trying to think of another option. I've come up with two: 1) Replace the Sorcerer with the Generic Spellcaster on pg 77 of Unearthed Arcana, but with a little less flexibility: a) Doesn't get to choose good/poor saves. Saves are the same as PHB sorcerer's. b) Does not get to choose arcane/divine spellcasting or his spellcasting attribute. He is an arcane caster, and uses charisma as his casting attribute. The main benefit, though, is that this caster can still select an assortment of known spells drawn from any of the wizard, cleric, druid or wu jen spell lists. 2) Retain the flavor of the PHB sorcerer but replace the mechanics with the mechanics of Mongoose Publishing's Quintessential Chaos Mage, with the following changes: a) His spellcasting attribute is charisma. b) Since he isn't casting "Chaos Magic", eliminate the Paths of Chaos. What I like about this option is the image of a natural caster not bound by laws of magic. I think it illustrates the caster who "alters reality by the force of his will" better than the "spells known" PHB sorcerer or any other "spells known" variant. Any thoughts or input? Thanks, jamie |
