My goal is to add a new option to D&D so that lightly armored characters are viable, at the same time I want it balanced so if some characters take it and other don't neither overshadows the other.

Now on with the feats.

Defense Style
Benefit: You gain a defense bonus equal to 30% of your level

Improved Defense Style
Prerequirements: Defensive Style
Benefit: Your Defense equals 40% of your level

Advanced Defense Style
Prerequirements: Defense Style, Improved Defense syle
Benefit: Your Defense equals 50% of your level

Greater Defense Style
Prerequirements: Defense Style, Improved Defense syle, Advanced
Benefit: Your Defense equals 60% of your level

Under this system if you wear armor you are not proficient with you suffer the normal penaltys and only benefit from 3/4th of the armor's given armor bonus (round down).
At character creation a character can trade a like number of Armor Proficiency for a like number of Defense styles.
Example: A fighter could trade his Medium and Heavy Armor Proficiencys for Defense style and Improved Defense Style and he could still wear Light Armor without Penalty.
