I had this idea for awhile now, but I usually wonder if it creats more bookkeeping. I dislike that the bonus skill points a character gets is tied to Int. Why, you may ask? Simple, a character should learn more skills from what his primary stat may be. A dexterous rogue is not only better at Dex based skills, but he would naturally have more of them. I would propose that each class have a prime stat, or a couple of prime stats that the player chooses from, and that is what determines the bonus skill points per level. Also, the skill points would need to be spent on skills apprpriate to the stat from which they derived. This may lead to adjusting the skill list of a couple of classes, mainly the sorcerer. It may not be a good answer, but I was wonderig what others thought of this idea.

One issue is that it doesn't allow concepts outside the norm. The dextrous rogue who focuses on Knowledge and Social skills; the strong (and smart) fighter who learns Tumble.

I know. That is why I havent worked on it too much...though giving a couple of choices, based on the type of rogue, or whatever, you want to play may work.

Plus, what happens when classes have multiple focus stats? It's not as if they're given by default in the class description, one rogue's focus on dex could work just as well as another's focus on strength. (a nimble theif as opposed to a stong-arm brute)

Would be like cross class skills, then. Focus stat for each class. And, just like specialist wizards, you couldnt multiclass a nimble rogue with a brutish street thug. You would spend your skill points you got from the class you leveled in appropriately. That is supposed to be the way it is done now, but if you are like me you tend to let players count class skills from all classes as class skills. If this rule was used, we would all have to use a firm hand when players spend their skill points. An alternate way is just to have the character pick a "favored" stat at character creation. This would have a bit of a d20 Modern feel. Then that would guide them along as they built on their character during play. Afterall, a nimble rogue that take up fighter may very well want to cater to their nimble ways as they get higher in level. You may even rule that any skill using the appropriate stat is never considered a cross class skill.

Before anybody gets the idea that I am preaching this as THE fix, I'm not. I just want to discuss what people think of the idea as a possible rule to use. I know that this may not be a seemless rule & if used may have to have the DM reaarrange the whole idea of class skills. I would hope not. That is why I put this forth, to see if it would be too much.

Actually, all skills from all classes *are* class skills... but only so far as Max Ranks. A fighter 1 / rogue 1 who takes another level of Fighter can have 6 ranks of tumble (class skill formula), but it will cost him 2 skp if he purchases it this level...

It depends on how you view skill points.

In the core rules it's based on Intelligence because it reflects the ability to learn new things. The thing you learn is modified by the relevent ability because that determines how well you do whatever it is you learned.

This makes sense to me, because you typically need to have the ability to learn something, in addition to the ability to do it. The modifier to your checks reflects a natural talent.

So here's a different approach, based solely on ability scores.

At each level you gain a fixed number of skill points (as you do now) not including the ability modifier.

You can assign them as normal to any skill you would like.

You gain bonus skill points based on the skills you select and your ability modifier divided by 2 (rounded down). You'll only get a benefit if your ability score is at least 14. You gain the bonus points for every skill you select, if you qualify.

If your modifier is:
0 or +1 then you get 0 bonus skill points in that skill.
+2 or +3 you get 1 bonus skill point in that skill.
+4 or +5 you get 2 bonus skill points in that skill.

If you have a high ability score and you select skills that use that ability, you may end up with more skill points than the old system. If you mix it up a bit more, then you may get more, less or the same as the old system. Characters who have more than 1 good ability could benefit from this quite a bit.
