Disapointed with the Weapon Groups [Archive] - Wizards Community

There was one factor of the weapon groups system that I am disatisfied with, and that is simple weapons. Sure, they set aside basic weapons, but a few of the weapon categories are only simple weapons (like claw). There's no reason other than flavor for anyone to choose those simple groups rather than a martial group. The exotic groups were balanced well, you have to take the martial group related to it (so it's basically like taking a feat for +1-+2 damage).

It's those simple groups that frustrate me. How do you think this could be handled differently?

Not really - I was going to say just collapse them into Basic Weapons, but it seems thatmost of those simple weapons only groups have a larger than normal range of Exotic Weapons... Perhaps that's the balanceing factor? Characters simply shouldn't take groups like claw unless they're interested in hooking up with the Exotic weapons group, and the six exotic claw weapons therein...

That's what I was thinking. You don't get much by taking some groups, but you get a lot more bang for your buck when you take the exotic weapon group.

My only suggestion is this: Designate the former martial weapon classes to have all simple proficiencies as well. For other characters, make martial weapon groups cost two of their weapon groups. Change the exotic group to a feat, but allow one's appropriate simple or martial focus feats to apply to the exotic weapons of those groups.
