Hello again. After playing a lot of games including Call of chutulu (ed 2 I beleive), Oblivion etc etc. I have come to think DnD would be much simpler in a good way if the whole level-progression was changed.

I am sure many have done it before me, and as such I would like to hear if anyone have comments or suggestions in regard to this system;

every character starts with 8hp, 2 feats and race/stats as usual. For every 500 experience points you gain a feat, or a special ability from the list below (or by talking to your GM).

Certain feats can be taken many times and stack, these are weapon focus, toughness and skill focus.

Apart from this you can chose from this list:

Sneak attack: You gain 1d6 sneak attack damage. This can only be taken once.

Improved sneak attack: (3 feats) You gain yet another d6 sneak attack damage.

Death attack: Follows the rules of the assassin ability, but instead of instant kill or paralyzis you deal maximum damage on weapon and sneak attack damamge rolls.

Uncanny dodge

Skill mastery

Slippery mind

Magician: You can cast any one first level spell at will. Cl 1.

Greater magician (5 feats): You can cast any one sencondlevel spell at will. Cl1. (note the cl).

High magician (10 feats): you can cast any one third level spell at will. Cl1. (note the cl)

wizardry: For all your spells cl improved by 1. Can be taken multiple times.

This list can go on forever, the point is it allows for progression, but without the hazzle of various classes, nor any xp-scale that is hard to get a gripp of or heroes that can kill a colossal dragon all by himself.

It also ensures that anyone who greatly boosts offense will take a serious defensive hit (8hp...).

Thoughts?

It would make for a radically different game, but I think I'd enjoy trying out something like that.

Check out this thread http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=10950213#post10950213 might be worth trying out once it is finished.

Exalted is a better system for something like this.

I tried a similar concept once. Characters started off with hit points equal to their CON score, and each "level", they get to choose any one bonus (feat, spellcasting, attack bonus, hit pointsm etc) available at that level.

This change is so radical you basicly build a new game from the ground up. Now, nothing is wrong with that, if that is what you want to do. Just expect it to take a lot of time. You would have to redo all spell progression, all monsters, the ECL system, XP, rewrite every published adventure...

What keeps me personally from doing it is, not only that I don't have the time for it, the result would still be too much like D&D that there is not enough to gain.

Exalted is a better system for something like this.

But that costs aditional money. With this system you should be able to utilize your DnD books and it should take very little time to settle with for those familiar with DnD.

I ahve reworked the system quite a bit and made it more readable in the following thread:
