Dragon Slave incantation? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I would like a Dragon Slave incantation that takes about as long as it does in the movie 35 sec. that is about 6 full rounds. The Dragon Slave is very powerful but because it takes so long to do the incantation I would like to make it so that a level 6 or so charecter could pull it off even if it would be fairly hard to do.

So what should the PC have to do? Use up a spell or two and make a concentation check and a spellcraft check?

Thanks for any help you can give!

No one is going to get your reference. Well, almost no one.

The thing you'll notice about incantations in The Slayers is that time seems to stop when they're doing it. Bandits and Monsters just stand there and wait patiently for Lina to obliterate them. And to make matters worse, plenty of times they don't incant at all!

But really, I'm not sure what your question is.

I get it just fine. :D

Sometimes Lina Inverse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lina_Inverse) does it as a standard action equivalent. Some times when she casts Fireball it takes a while as well as she chants the whole spell.

In the end it is too powerful to use.

Thanks for the replays. I know it is powerful but that was the reason for using an incantation instead of trying to make it a level nine spell. The fact that Lina almost always uses the incantation for the dragon slaves is another.
I also know how long the incantation takes and that it is 54 words long so I thought it might be possible to make it into a D&D incantation.

All so from what I understand Lina is getting the power of the spell from another plane, and the power is coming from a demon. So it sounded a lot like a D&D incantation in that the power is not coming from the caster.

Epic spellcasting is probably your best bet.

Also, in anime, it is not uncommon for the creators to slow down the animation for the viewing pleasure of the audience. For example, while it might take 4-5 seconds for a transformation scene to take place, only a split second might have elapsed for the characters.

So, to simplify this to pure D&D terms, you have a spell that you want to be overpowered for its level. To balance this, the spell takes six rounds to cast, and you need a mechanic for casting a spell over that length of time.

Take a look at page 174 of the PHB 3.5, under Casting Time. Assuming she's left alone, she willl stand there for six rounds and do nothing but cast the spell. On the seventh round, the spell happens, and then she's free to take whatever actions she wants. Of course, if at any time during those six rounds, something might happen to break her concentration (The baddies in D&D usually don't just sit there and wait for you to finish, dispite how things work in anime.) Then you have to roll your concentration checks like normal (Page 170).

Honestly, that's not worth doing for a combat-type spell. Most battles are over by turn six. If it's not a acombat-type spell, then what's the point of breaking it down into rounds?

The incantation is: Heed me, Oh spirits darker than dusk. Red beyond crimson flow like blood. In the name of those reduced to dust. I pray to the shadows. Mark ye these villains that bar our way. And to my small strength thine own ally. To deliver doom, folly repay. Come judgement from the grave. Dragon Slave!

I got this from the movie, had to repay it over 20 times. I do not think they are slowing it down because there are hand movements that go a long with the incantation as the energy is gethered for the spell. The spell is an area spell that leaves a crater about 50-100 feet wide and 20 feet deep.:)

It depends on the translation and the instance in which it is used...

Darkness beyond the darkest night.
Crimson beyond blood that flow.
Buried in the stream of time is where you power grows.
I pledge myself to conquer all the foes who stand.
Against the gift bestowed in my unworthy hand.
Now let the fools that stand before me be destroyed by the power you and I possess.
DRAGON SLAVE

Takes about 24 seconds or three rounds.

Rather that overcompensate it to balance out the brokenness of the spell (cast it indoors and destroy city!) tone the power down.

DRAGON SLAVE
Evocation/Conjuration
Level: Sorcerer/Wizard 7
Components V, S
casting Time: See Text
Range: See Text
Area: See Text
Saving Throw: Fortitude half
Spell Resistance: Yes.

A bright aura surrounds you as you call forth the power of the Dark Lord and channel it into a potent blast of increasing potency.

This spell creates a spread that deals non-typed damage. The strength of the blast depends on the time you spend casting the spell. Unattended objects take this damage and it deals half damage to objects.

If the Dragon Slave deals enough damage to a barrier to destroy it is continues beyond that barrier.

If you spend a standard action this spell has a Close range (25 feet + 5 feet/2 levels) and deals 1d6 points of damage per caster level (max 20d6 at caster level 20) in a 20 foot Radius.

If you spend 2 rounds casting this spells has a Medium range (100 feet + 10 feet/level) and deals 1d8 points of damage per caster level (max 25d8 at caster level 25) in a 30 foot Radius.

If you spend 3 rounds casting this spells has a Long range (400 feet + 40 feet/level) and deals 2d6 points of damage per caster level (max 60d6 at caster level 30) in a 40 foot Radius.

Your welcome, just remember because I made it up on the spot I don't know if it is balanced or not. :mage:

The mechanic I used is the channeled spell mechanic from the Complete Mage. You don't have to decide before hand how long you are going to take to cast it.

I disagree. Dragon Slave, while powerful, is probably not epic. I'd place it as a ninth level spell, similar it power to Meteor Swarm, and dealing half fire, half negative damage, with some kind of bonus against dragons and small villages.
And if Dragon Slave is Epic, what's Giga Slave supposed to be?

Also, it might even do subdual damage against non dragons. While it's really just the goofy side of the show, there are an odd number of level 1 commoners that survive her dragon slaves, pitchforks intact.

Finally, I always thought, like one poster suggested, that sorcerers could vary their casting time in Slayers, drawing it out when they need it to be more powerful. This could be represented with a hightened spell kind off effect (as in Arcana Evolved), but where the cost is that the spell is a full round action to cast.

Increased casting time can also be a nice way to substitute spell levels when applying metamagic feats. Like "You can memorize X as a higher level spell, and cast it quick" or "You can memorize X like normal, and then spend <X> extra rounds casting to get the <Y> metamagic feat (assuming you know it) added to the spell".

Hate to tell you this, but I've already statted up Dragon Slave. And you can't forget the english version of the spell,

Heed me now, thou who are darker than dusk
Heed, thou which is more red than blood
In the name of that which has been buried in the bottomless abyss of time eternal
I summon thee, master of the ultimate darkness
Have no pity of the fools who stand in our way
Infuse me with power, let your strength become mine
To wipe them from the face of this earth
To deliver unto them the ultimate doom,
DRAGON SLAVE!!

Here's (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=908563) my version of Dragon Slave. I was quite proud of it, though most people seemed to think it was still overpowered, despite what I did to tone it down.

I have the Guardians of Order Slayers d20 book.

They give the incantation as

Power beyond twilight, crimson beyond blood that flows.
Buried in the stream of time is where your power grows.
I pledge myself to conquer all the fools who stand
against the mighty gift bestowed in my unworthy hand.

This is not quite what I remember from the anime, but I'm not going to go rent it just to check.
The spell-casting system in this book isn't Vancian, but rather a caster makes a check upon casting to avoid becoming fatigued. Both making the incantation and/or naming the spell as it is cast reduce the change of becoming fatigued, but obviate the need for a spellcraft check for anyone attempting to identify the spell as it is cast (possibly allowing a counter-spell).

GoO give the Dragon Slave spell damage as 2d6/caster level with no cap in a 100 ft. radius spread with a range of 400 ft + 40 ft / level.

You don't want to know what a Giga Slave does ...

I call upon thee and swear myself to thee !
Let the fools who stand before me be destroyed by the power you and I possess !

That's if you get it wrong. If you get it right, it just seriously blows stuff up.
