Drinks and various house rules about them [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-19-04, 09:40 PM I'd like to hear what all of YOU do about drinks in the ever present "tavern/bar/inn/adventurer hotspot"

For example, do you _____
etc!

I find milk bars are always nice for the younger players. Not even fermented orange juice (which by the way I did drink in 7th grade. Reminded me of soda..)

10-21-04, 06:02 PM I started having PCs drink in bars/taverns/etc. when I was quite young. I haven't DMed for much younger kids recently, but I would probably treat them the way I would have wanted to be treated at that age.

Just because their characters are drinking it up doesn't mean that the players will end up as delinquents. Doing things in the game that you can't do in real life is one of the points of roleplaying. For instance, I don't smoke, but many of my D&D characters have been avid pipe smokers. Why? Atmosphere...vicarious thrills, etc.

Kids see people drinking, smoking, and so forth all the time. Personally, I just don't think they'll be corrupted by playing characters who do.

If you want to "send a message," might I suggest requiring fort saves to avoid hangovers after a night of extensive drinking. Failure results in mentions of the PC feeling sick and having a penalty to attack rolls and skill checks the next day.

If a PC misses an opponent because he's feeling "hungover," you've accomplished more than you would by pretending alcohol doesn't exist. I mean, can you imagine the following conversation?

Random Teenager: "Hey dude, let's get together and drink beers tonight."
Gamer Kid: "No thanks man! You get hangovers when you drink too much!"
RT: "How do you know that?"
GK: "When I was 10, we had this really cool DM who let our characters drink, y'know, since they were adults. My barbarian Ulrick would get plastered all the time, and then one day I couldn't hit the bad guys during a fight cuz ol' Ulrick was hungover. It almost got the party killed! Our DM was always pretty straight with us, treating us like adults and all, so I figured he wasn't just preaching, but speaking from experience, y'know?"
RT: "Hey, whatever."

Wouldn't you feel SOOO proud? :D
