I was wondering if anybody has any rules for swapping out 1 class for another.

no, theirs no raw rules/varaint rules for that!-dual class died out years ago for that idea in AD&D!-but mabye you can talk to your dm about making a house rule about it

If you can get your hands on the Unearthed Arcana, there is a "dual-classing progression" in there call Gestalt Builds.

It rocks....but it's a bit too uber for most campaigns.

No, I was thinking on how gestalt was very similiar to 2nd edition multi-classing, so I was thinking that maybe their was a way to make a system to represent dual classing. I was thinking for an example let's say you had a fighter level 8, the system would requir him to lets say gain, let's say1/4 of his non-wizard levels in wizard. This gives him the basics. I'm not sure on the middle ground, but I was thinking that their would be an exp penalty and he would have to keep 1 level of fighter to represent the very basic abilities of being a fighter that he retained.

I really fail to see any benefit in that. It causes strange forgetfulness of abilities. Use normal multiclassing rules, or Szatany's for a twist. Link is in my sig and the thread in this page.

I was thinking it more of an use it or lose it type of thing. Where the previous skills atrophy to where it is represented via level loss in that class. It just might not really be feasible. This was mainly just an idea I had to see if I could come up with a mechanic that anologs the old dual-classing system.
