Enchantomatons (needs a better name) [Archive] - Wizards Community

I have a (very cool) idea.

Why do golems have to be big brutes who stumble around destroying things?

My idea is to have a type of golem that is just like a normal person. They could closely resemble any humanoid and would be able to perform in several different ways defined by abilities assignable at its creation. They would be highly customizeable but cannot be changed after their completion.

Quote:

Enchantomaton

An enchantomaton represents a handsome humanoid about 5'7" tall. It's features are unflawed and it seems to glow slightly. It's habit is strange and almost otherworldy, yet simple and beautiful at the same time. It is unresponsive to anyone except its creator unless otherwise directed.
Although the golem looks peaceful and harmless, it can carry out its assigned duty with brutal efficiency, and some are even trained for physical and magical combat.

Construction: The parts required to construct a golem must come from non-decayed humanoid remains (for organic organs). Special ingredients and mechanical parts (such as bindings, clockwork, etc.) can be bought for 1800 gp. Their outside form is created magically and looks as the creator desires.
Assembling the golem requires a DC 15 Craft (construct) or a DC 15 Craft (magical device) check.
CL 11th; Craft Construct (see page 303) animate objects, geas/quest, limited wish, caster must be at least 11th level; Price 42000gp; Cost 23000gp + 1540 XP.

Abilities: Coming soon.

What do you think? It needs some tweaking and the abilities aren't thought out yet.
Any ideas? Name ideas would be great

PS: a type of homonculus might work as well

This idea would be a supplement to the above, or maybe a path to integrate them into the game. What about introducing the Artificer class? They are skilled in crafting and such so they could create the automatons a sa homonculus. I would like to modify the class to allow for more sorceror/wizard type spells though so I would maybe have to remove some class features.

You might want to check out the Nimblewright (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/mm2_gallery/88268_620_95.jpg) from the MMII.

While it clearly excels in the area of "Destroying things", one of its key abilities is that it is difficult to distinguish from an armored humanoid (which I believe shows up in its description).

Effigy Creatures. The template just needs to be applied to a humanoid.

In a Dragon Magazine there were two types of golems like this, Tin and Wax. The Tin Golem could be "programmed" with two skills of 6 ponts each. The Wax Golem, if I remember correctly, was something like a butler in that it had limited reasoning ability and could follow more complex orders. I have also played adventures where the characters met more intelligent golems serving as butlers and such. There weren't sentient like humans, but were more capable in terms of tasks than the typical golem.

Simulacrum (with the plural being Simulacra) would seem to be a good name for this sort of construct.

There is already a wizard spell that allows one to create such a thing. My wizards have used them to do things like various crafts or to handle day to day business matters while the real wizard was off doing other things.
