I want to start a game which is more or less Core (plus the very nice "Higher Level Feats for the Fighting Man" by Ronin Arts), because I want to keep things simple.

I thought about a simple change to the fighter, which brings the class more in line with my vision: The most versatile Fighting Man, simple but reliable.

Here it is:

Remove:

1st Level Bonus Feat.

Add:

Combat Dominance(Ex): A 1st level fighter gets a +1 bonus on all attack rolls and on checks or rolls to resist bull rush, disarm, grapple, overrun and trip attemps. At 5th level, and at every five levels thereafter, the bonus increases by +1, to a maximum of +5 at level 20.

What do you think? I really hope this change makes players feel better not multiclassing out of the fighter. (Some players feel forced to do so, allthough it does not fit their character concept at all to take any of the available PrCls.)

Those bonuses are extremely nominal. A specialist will still absolutely rape the generalist/damge dealing fighter.

Honestly, I can't see that ruining your game any. It'll make the fighter slightly more appealing.

Keep an eye out for grapple builds, which can already amass a tremedous positive modifier with minimal effort.

If i were in your game, id opt to get my feat back.

Maybe add that in addition to the feat, but not instead of. Many fighter builds do not focus on these things, so being better at them simply makes their character less good at what he wanted.

so you think a feat is better than a +5 bonus to hit and resist most maneuvers? (at level 20)

Make 'Combat Dominance' a feat available only to fighters.

oh, sorry, I forgot to mention it starts with +1 at first level and than increases by plus 1 every 5 levels.

Yes i do. If my build is based on two handed weapon power attack route for example. I am going to want to get power attack cleave and leap attack ect ASAP. I am now effectivly weaker because i need to wait longer to gain those feats. Sure i have a bonus vs disarm trip grapple ect, but my full BAB, STR, and two handed weapon make it already difficult to do anyway.

If i were going for a tripper/disarmer/sunderer/ect i would opt for this. I like the idea of making this a feat for fighters only.

Im also not talking in terms of level 20. When creating a character i would opt to go for the feat that allows me to reach level 20, instead of the ability where if i become level 20 will be handy.

hmm, yeah, that makes sense to me, so maybe I should go down a different route.

(I did not really think about that, because in my opinion a fighter is a tricks and stuff character, I would allways opt to go barbarian if I want to dish out damage)

I would consider "adding" the ability to the fighter rather than taking away a feat. That would make it more useful.

A few suggestions.

Instead of 'defending against' add it to all checks.
If you take improved sunder as a fighter - you're better at sunders than non-fighters. (I like that...)

or

give combat dominace at 2nd level but start at +2 for the bonus (stops cherry picking fighter).

or

reduce the frequency at which it is gained (at 4th or 3rd levels) - I'd work out a system to be a max of +5 at 15th level.

but I would remove the bonus to hit (too good, way better than weapon focus).

I'd have it apply to any 'combat action' that has a 'check': Bull Rush, Disarm, Feint, Grapple, Overrun, Sunder, Trip

----------------------

I think I would go for +2 at 5th level (when fighters normally have a dead level) and +1 for every 5 levels after (10/15/20) to all checks to for: Bull Rush, Disarm, Feint, Grapple, Overrun, Sunder, Trip
