Was just wondering if anyone has used this variant.
How does it compare to the norm.

I'm thinking of using them in my next campaign. The hardest sell to the players will be that the divine spellcaster is as bad of a combatant as a wizard.

Personally I like the idea of a priest being robed rather than armored.

I'm also thinking of giving the spellcasters more spells, and upping the table so they get 2nd level spells at 3rd level, 3rd at 5th, etc.

Was there any playtesting of this system prior to publishing?

On paper at least it seems to work.

I used them when doing a Steampunk/Arcanum campaign. They worked out pretty good. We had an Elf Divine Spellcaster (Necromancer), a Halfling Expert (Theif/Craftsman), and a Dwarven Warrior (Gunsmith/Gunweilder). They were pretty well balanced characters, and I don't think anything got out of hand. We all had a good time with them, but ultimately, we missed playing our old favorites.

I'm considering using them together with the Ranger, Paladin and Bard Prestige Classes (memo: might add druid). I think it's an interesting idea, especially with the customization of class skills.

I haven't tried this, but I've toyed with the idea of having all players take at least 3 levels of a generic class before specializing into one of the core classes. I haven't though tthis out very much though, and I have no idea how I would work spell, but it's a thought.
