When I am looking over the rules for creating magical items, I'm frequently dissappointed with the discrepency between the various item creation feats. Notably, the fact that with Craft Arms and Armor and Craft Wondrous Item, you can create 70 or 80% of the magic items that you are likely to to be using at any given time. After thinking about it, I have been leaning towards resolving this issue by making a smaller number of more generic feats:

Craft Consumable Item: Brew Potion, Scribe Scroll, Contingent Spell (some wondrous items)
Craft Charged Item: Craft Wand, Craft Staff, Craft Sceptre (some wondrous items, rods)
Craft Arms and Armor: Craft Arms and Armor, Craft Rod (minus charged/consumable)
Craft Wondrous Item: Craft Wondrous Item, Forge Ring (minus charged/consumable, some rods)
Craft Living Item: Craft Construct, (all intelligent items)

Note: Not an exhaustive list of existing item creation feats in supplements.

While you would only need the one feat to craft any of the associated items, level limits for specific items would still apply. So while you could scribe scrolls and brew potions at level 3 with the Craft Consumable Item feat, you would not be able to craft contingent spells until 11th level. For all intents and purposes, any existing prerequisites to take a feat would still apply to creating that type of item.

Most of the existing item creation feats would be rolled into these five (or possibly one or two others such as Craft Stationary Item [portals, rune circles, etc...]), however, some specialty items might still require an individual feat to craft. For instance, Sanctify Relic would be its own feat and would not be rolled into wondrous item. Graft Flesh would be another good example, though it is probable that with the relaxed limitations imposed on item creation there would be no need to select a particular type of graft.

I am interested in how much of a power boost people believe this would be for characters, and/or if you believe it serves to balance out item access.

It is a power boost but not much of one. Item creation already has costs and balance checks even before you take the opportunity cost of picking up an item creation feat. You still have Arms/Armor and Wondrous. Your only promoting the ability to be more varied in creation on the low percentage items. The boost is insignifigant yet will most likely be happily appreciated by anyone who ever wanted to play a crafter in yours games. Go for it.
