Generic spellcasters and arcane spell failure [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-08-05, 11:00 PM Does a generic arcane spellcaster suffer arcane spell failure when wearing armor? Divine spellcasters probably shouldn't, as they cast divine spells. But wouldn't it be unbalanced if arcane spellcasters did have to worry about it?

04-10-05, 03:10 AM Spellcaster's do not have to worry about arcane spell failure. Being arcane or divine only really affects the ability score used for spellcasting. (Oh, and arcane spellcasters cannot use scrolls created by divine spellcasters and vice versa.)

A spellcaster learns and casts spells as a sorcerer.

Given this, I've ruled that, yes, all spellcasters suffer arcane spell failure from armor and shields, since the core sorcerer does. Also, whenever a spell is different levels on the wizard/sorcerer, cleric, and druid lists, that spell is available at the level sorcerers would normally get it, because the line states that they learn and cast spells as a sorcerer.

I would see it as very unequal if the divine spellcasters could walk around in full plate armor and not worry about ASF, while arcane spellcasters couldn't, since they have the exact same spell lists. The only different between them is the ability score that controls their spellcasting (all three have their own merits) and which type of scrolls they create/can use.
