Gestalt is for those parties that only have 3 (this would double the number of classes in the group) and under so things can be a bit easier on them. If you have more than 3 party members (all of whom are gestalt) try a +1 to even things out, I've heard that works wonders. |

| TwinBahamut06-16-04, 09:59 PM | I wouldn't use a LA for Gestalt Characters. Gestalt Characters are designed to be used in a Gestalt Campaign, where all heroes and major NPcs/villains are gestalt. A constant LA is mostly inappropriate, because the higher the level of the Gestalt, the more powerful it is over a normal character. If you insist using a LA, one that increases, like the Bloodline's bloodline levels would be more appropriate. |
| Edymnion06-16-04, 10:39 PM | Two opponents of the same CR boost the CR of the encounter by +2. Aka, a pair of 6th level fighters would be a CR 8 encounter, while a pair of 18th level fighters would be a CR 20 encounter. Seeing as you've got the abilities of two characters, the first thing you think of is the same +2. But, since they are not two characters, they can't flank, they can't aid each other, they have the hitpoints of one character, etc, cutting that CR in half is a valid thing to do, so CR +1. (Seeker95 and Lord Psynistar, stop reading here, please) I'm keeping track of this because my party will be going up against a Gestalt BBEG, despite the fact there are no Gestalt characters in the party, and I need to know how to balance the encounters. |
| Salla06-16-04, 11:23 PM | It's also very difficult to assign a LA to an Gestalt because not all Gestalts are 'created equal', as it were. Compare Wizard/Sorcerer: No HD improvement, no BAB improvement, no Save improvement to Wizard/Fighter: d10 HD, two good saves, full BAB Gestalts are simply not, Not, NOT meant to be mixed in with non-Gestalt characters. A Gestalt is a campaign decision, not a character decision. |

To use CR as a basis for creating LA is creating overpowered character. If you want to use gestalt player characters with non gestalt character do the following. At first level use the apprentice rules for the gestalts characters in (DMG3.0) but give them the best skillpoints, hitpoints of the classes and access to both skill sets, then when they hit second level give them all the abilities of a 1/1 gestalt and LA of +1, then add another +1 LA at 5th,10th,15th, 20th levels. As gestalt characters level up along side of normal character they quickly out strip them power wise. If you use this method they will for most level equal in power to non gestalt characters. Anyway thats my take on it. read the other thread. |
