Assuming Gestalt LA could never be bought off, what LA would you give to these characters in a non-Gestalt campaign?

The standard D&D "level adjustment" seems to be around +3(.5). Look at the Mystic Theurge, Arcane Heirophant, for example. They literally give you the powers of two classes at once. For example, a level 10 Mystic Theurge casts as well as 2 level 7 characters (although he loses out on other class features that clerics and wizards have). The Arcane Heirophant is similar as well.

Some "dual" classes are harder to classify in terms of what their equivalent LA would be. A level 10 Arcane Trickster casts as well as a level 7 character, but only sneak attacks as well as a 5th level rogue. A 10th level Eldritch Knight casts as well as an 8th level wizard (or even 9th level, if you build them right), but fights as well as...I dunno, a 6th level fighter? His BAB will be 7, but he'll have fewer feats and HP.

That said,

This method currently has some big problems. Having all the powers of multiple, weaker characters does not hold up well in D&D. I would give the Gestalt a LA of +2, probably. Possibly +3, if someone could be inclined to show me how, say, a 12th level wizard/cleric is stronger than a 14th level cleric (for example).

I'd give them +1/level :D

It's tough to gauge. LA usually compensates for some static benefit. Gestalt is more and more powerful with levels. For example a Druid3/Rogue3 gestalt is only a little more powerful than a Druid3 or Rogue3 (LA 1 or 2 maybe). However, a Druid15/Rogue15 is way more powerful than a Druid15 or Rogue15. Also, in gestalt prestige classes are far easier to qualify for and many are outright broken. Consider Druid10 vs Druid10/Barb5/Warshaper5 gestalt. Maybe CL/3 round up might be on track but it would depend on how well the gestalt characters are built.

Most people seem to think +3 is quite fair. Personally I don't think gestalt and non-gestalt characters should be mixed in one game, but it's really your call.

Compare a 15/15 Sorcerer/Fighter to a 17 Sorcerer with a level 15 Fighter cohort from the leadership feat.

Additionally, two level 15 characters have a CR of 17, but they get two separate turns each turn. A 15/15 might not quite be a CR 17 since they don't get all of the separate actions and have to spend their feats on multiple talents.

I lean towards a +1 CR increase for Gestalt characters, and a +2 LA.

A long time ago, the following suggestion was also made: Apply a 33% (1/3) XP penalty, which basically means a slowing growing LA (I beleive it's like 4 levels behind at level 20).

That actually sounds like a pretty good idea!

gestalt charecters can deal with challenges one level higher than usual.assumeing you give them gear of there LAed level, and there with non gestalts.
+2 is correct, more than that and gestalts become unplayable.
