Gestalt House rule? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I've been wondering about a way to allow players who want to play a Gestalt class to play along with those who don't want to allow Gestalt Classes (since everyone has to play Gestalt if you allow it according to UA, due to balance concerns).

So I've been thinking that those who play Gestalt will simply have to gain more XP to gain a level. I've been thinking of two ways to do this...and I'm wondering if anyone else has tried this where Gestalt Players play right alongside with those who are not Gestalt, and which might be the preference...or if any other ideas are presented.

Gestalt Characters will get an automatic ECL of +1. Hence to get to level 2 they will need 2000 XP, to get to level 3 they'll need 3000 XP and so forth.

It says that they are around 1.5 times more powerful...so it should keep them about equal till around level 5 to 10. At that point however, that idea falls apart...

So Perhaps giving them an ECL +1 for every 5 levels? So they'll need 5000 XP to get to level 5, but to get to level 6 they'll need 7000 XP instead of 6000?

The other idea I've floated around is doubling the XP they need to get to the next level...OR multiplying it by 1.5 (haven't decided, the x2 is simpler and easier, but the 1.5 I think might match the UA idea better).

So they would need 2000 XP to get to 2nd level, but 4000 XP to get to level 3 and 6000 XP to get to level 4.

Or under the 1.5 rule they'd need 1500 to get to level 2, 3000 to get to level 3, and 4500 to get to level 4 and so forth.

What may be easier is this. Assuming the 1.5 times more powerful bit is correct, simply apply a .5 LA for every level the character gains. So a level 6 gestalt character has a +3 LA and levels at the ECL 9 rate, right along with his level 9 non-gestalt companions. If you come to find that the 1.5 is not accurate it is not difficult to adjust the gestalt character with a +/- 1 LA until a balance is found.

Just warn the gestalt player (and the group as a whole) in advance that this may happen so they are not surprised if you need to do this.

I've been thinking about the same thing ...and requiring 1.5 times the xp sounds good to me. This would give a 16th lvl Gestalt at the same time you have a 20th lvl normal. Multiplying by 2 would give you a 14th lvl Gestalt to a 20th lvl normal. I don't think that is good enough personally... just on BAB, a 20th lvl fighter would be getting 2 more attacks per round, not one more. You could also do it by giving the NON-Gestalt PC additional XP instead of requiring the Gestalt PC to earn more...depending on your desires and point of view.
