I dont believe the rules say anything on this and I am really confused as to how it works.

A minotaur gesalt character would have a LA of +2 and 6 RHD so how does that work out?

Ive been told that it could be
1st lvl 1 LA and 1 RHD
2nd lvl 2 LA 2 RHD
3rd lvl 1 Class lvl 3 RHD

The other way ive been told is
1st lvl 1 LA and 1 LA eliminating the LA on the first level
2nd lvl 1 Class lvl 1 RHD
3rd lvl 2 Class lvl 2 RHD

I dont know if either of these are correct but if someone could tell me how its supposed to work that would be very helpful.

Thanks.

I've been playing it that LA and Racial HD don't Gestalt with any kind of class levels and it works out fine IMC. They have fewer class levels, but their racial abilities make up for it easily, and we've also been using a modified LA buyout rule(buy off 1 LA every 3 class levels flat-out instead of the way listed in UA) which is also nice. The characters are pretty equal to one another in most situations. FYI, the ones with racial HD are a Troll and an Ogre, and each are potent melee fighters and well-suited to their party roles. None of the others is more powerful in their bailiwick, and vice versa with other party members.

The Ogre has more class levels, so he has more tricks than the Troll(such as Great Cleave), but the Troll is of course nigh-indestructible thanks to his Regeneration.

If you use the savage progression rules from the Savage Species book, then you might be able to convince your DM to let you advance in class levels along with your "minotaur levels".

However, if you don't use those rules, you won't get your first class level until character level 9th, when you get two class levels due to the gestalt option. If I were your DM, I'd potentially give you a lower LA, considering it is a gestalt campaign.

I've been trying to convince my DM for our Eberron game to let me play a gold dragon ala Savage Speices style.

Given the assumption that you can Gestalt LA and Racial HD at all (Not all people agree with that, but that's another argument), you can not gestalt them with each other. Say you are a Thri-kreen with 2 HD and +2 LA. that's 4 ECL. THink of that as 4 levels in 1 class. SO you can have 4 levels of that 1 class gestalted with 4 levels of other classes. Example:

thrikreen(HD)/Psy-warrior
Thrikreen(HD)/Psy-warrior
Thrikreen(LA)/psy-warrior
THrikreen(LA)/Psy-warrior
[whatever]/Psy-warrior

You are now a 5th level character with the abilties of a 5th level psy warrior gestalted with your thrikreen racial abilies and 1 other class. If you have templates that give you LA too, the templates are of the racial class too, meaning you still can;t gestalt them with racial HD or LA. Just like you cant gestalt yourself as being a Wizard1/wizard2 at first level.

And besides, you don't want to gestalt your LA with LA anyway: that's a full level where you wouldn;t get any HD at all.

Yeah, exactly.

That's how we're doing my Lich levels, too, in my new build. From levels 16 - 20, on one "side" of my character, it's purely Lich

Ends up looking like:

Lich 1(LA)/Cleric 17
Lich 2(LA)/Cleric 18
Lich 3(LA)/Wizard 17 (19th ECL)
Lich 4(LA)/Wizard 18 (19th ECL)

I always post it like:

Lich 1/Cleric 17
Lich 2/Cleric 18
Wizard 17/Lich 3 (ECL 19)
Wizard 18/Lich 4 (ECL 20)

Purely a cosmetic difference, however.
