i want to use a gestalt character but am confused about the rules.
if i had a lvl 1 gestalt character say fighter1/ranger1 does that mean i am lvl 2 or lvl 1 and if so does that mean i would need to get the xp for a lvl 2 character at a lvl1 gestalt

A Gestalt Fighter/Ranger 1 is a Level 1 character. It requires 1,000 XP to attain 2nd level, at which point it is a Fighter/Ranger 2 (unless you decide to multiclass).

A fighter/ranger 1 is a first level character with the following class features

d10 Hit Die
BAB +1
Fort +2
Reflex +2
Will +0

1st favored enemy, Track, wild empathy, fighter bonus feat.

You start with (6+int) x 4 skill points, and your class skills are Climb, Concentration, Craft, Handle Animal, Heal, Hide, Intimidate, Jump, Knowledge (dungeoneering), Knowledge (geography), Knowledge (nature), Listen, Move Silently, Profession, Ride, Search, Spot, Survival, Swim, and Use Rope.

At second level, you'll gain your Combat Style (which will give you either Two-Weapon Fighting or Rapid Shot) and a second fighter bonus feat.

This is all 3.5, of course. I don't think anyone's trying to gestalt anything 3.0.

Not true. A gestalt character needs 150% of normal Xp to advance a level. This means you need to acquire 1500Xp to become level 2., and then 3000 for a total of 4500Xp to become level 3. etc.

Experience table including Gestalt characters:

Lvl: Normal: Gestalt:

2 1000 1500
3 3000 4500
4 6000 9000
5 10000 15000 (Non-Gestalts are now 1 level ahead)
6 15000 22500

Huh? I don't see anything about Gestalt characters requiring extra xp to advance in UA.

I don't have the book on hand so i can't give you the pagenumber, but i'm sure it's there. Theres some story how concentrating on two different classes is more straining and thus requires more training etc.

I just looked at the book, going through the Gestalt section. Nowhere does it say that they must acquire an additional 50% of the required XP to level.
They do, however, give tips on how to keep Gestalts from advancing quicker than normal characters, though...

That would be multi classing more then one classes and if one of them is not a favored class of yours. That doesn't apply to Gestalts.

Strange... iahd whole discussions about this very thing a while ago on the board. I could swear it was in there. But it looks like i'm wrong. Nevertheless, when i visit my UA owning friend again, i'll reread the part about gestalts.

Yeah, the deal with gestalt is that they're more powerful; that's all there is to it.

Well, that was probably one of the threads where they talk about how to balance in Gestalts with regular PCs. I think someone had that suggestion.
