I really like both the psionics and gestalt systems, and realized that the gestalt system could overcome some of the problems within the Soulknife class. How to do that, though, is another matter.

Any ideas of what class to mix with the soulknife to minimize the locked-in nature of the class? or to make it a viable choice for 1-20?

If you want to maximize the soul-knife in terms of combat versatility, then you need to multi-class with fighter.

The point of gestalt is versatility, though. I would suggest swashbuckler, but that's just me.

If you want full BaB, I reccomend any +1 BaB class except for Barbarian (if you are raging, you won;t be able to Refocus). Taking 10 levels of a +1 BaB class and 10 levels of Warmind seems liek a good option (Maybe fighter5 or Ranger5, Tempest 5, Warmind10? not nessicarily in that order) Tempest would be good because you can already split your blade for TWF.

Psychic Warrior-Soulknife. All the nifty Soulknife abilities combined with the battle-oriented psychic powers that make it even better, plus you get all Good saves. Or if you want a little more psychic "oomph", go with a Psion. Average BAB and a d10 HD with Soulknife combat abilities and Psion's wide array of powers would make a nice hybrid.

Or if you want to emphasize the combat aspect, Soulknife-Fighter 4, Soulknife-Monk 11, Soulknife-Shou Disciple 5. Greater Martial Flurry with your Mind Blade at any size, and with the Two-Weapon Fighting tree, machine-gun Mind Blade blows.
