It's my attempt at sortof balancing gestalt sense not all classes are created equal. See, what if the gestalt was limited to a templare selection? Players choose between the four basic achretypes as a template, then made a character by selecting two classes in that category. Here's an example using the system reference of playershandbook, unearthed arcana, dnd articles, and XPH.

Arcane:
Wizard
Sorcerer
Psion
Baridc Sage
Archivist

Divine:
Cleric
Druid
Divine Bard
Monk
Ranger

Theif:
Rogue
Bard (or savage bard)
Spellthief
Soulknife
Psychic-Rogue

Warrior:
Fighter
Barbarian
Paladin
Psychic Warrior
Battle Sorcerer

Now say I chose the warrior template, i'm limited to the classes in the warrior template to gestalt with. I have a slew of options still, but it's a bit less brokage.

Gritty Combat:
Another idea I had involved making weapons actually be reasonable to spells. Now the vitality system helpsout alot. What with criticals being cheap.

The massive damage threshold of con also does good.

But now there's an even more cruel way to make a player fear the sword more then the spellbook!

Crippeling Blow:
In the event a character is dealt enough normal (non-magical) damage for a crippeling blow, they must make a fortitude saving throw equal to damage dealt or become fatigue. As always, if they were already fatigue they become exhausted, and if already exhausted, become unconsciouse. Crippeling blow threshold is equal to 10+character level.

At later levels I don't see crippeling blows happening on anything short of criticals. Which seems to be the only downside as it's more of the same. Low levels have it too rough, high levels not nearly rough enough!

Where's the ninja?
I don't have any complete books, spelltheif's only there because it was free spoiler.

I suppose ninja would be in the rogue category.

Oh, okay.

Works for me then. :)

1: Doesn't this remove the one big advantage of gestalt - that characters can fill more than one niche and become a bit more generalist?

2: If not all classes are created equal, how does this help?

3: How about multi-classes gestalt characters (eg Gishes)?

At medium and high levels any Melee type with some focus on causing damage should easily be able to cause the 20 (Level 10) or 30 (Level 20) damage with one hit.

Versus an equal level opponent, a Rogue with Strength 10 and a shortsword will beat your threshold on an average SA hit at level 7 or higher (or level 5 with a +1 weapon).

Your system will lead to large numbers of additional FORT saves.

We instituted a rule, when using vitality and wounds, that you needed a Fort save when you took wound damage. DC was 15+damage dealt. Fail and you are fatigued. We played with some variants where fail by 5 might leave you stunned for a round, and fail by 10 and you were unconscious. Never did hit the right combo, but we all agreed in our group that it should scale upward.
