The problem is that some classes (i.e Eldrich Theurge) has 10 levels, while some (Archmage) have 5 levels, and some few (Hellfire Warlock) has only 3 levels. How do I combine them? Can I combine I.E. like gestalt (One class with 20 levels)/ (multiple Prestigeclasses with a total of 20 levels together)? |
| NoldorForce05-11-07, 04:44 PM | As a general rule, the text states that multiclassing PrCs (such as the aforementioned Eldritch Theurge) should not be allowed. Additionally, you may not take two PrCs at once. The example you gave is fine as long as no multiclassing PrCs are in that mix. Most if not all of Unearthed Arcana is Open Game Content, and is thus available at various SRD sites. Gestalt in particular can be found here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/gestaltCharacters.htm). |
| Kapre05-11-07, 04:46 PM | I have the paragraph in question in front of me now, and it looks like the players are encuraged to create high powered prestiege classes, or very specilized. With the high powered choice, the prestiege class would take both class 'slots' for that level, and with the highly specilized class, the player can also take a non-prestiege class along with it. It is specifically stated that you cannot combine 2 prestiege classes, and the prestiege classes that are basically combinations should be prohibited. |
| Grizzled Gryphon05-12-07, 11:25 AM | Rightly so. In your example, suggested a base class on one side, and a PrC chain on the other. That is fine, but you still need to meet the prereq's for any PrC you want. Another thing I don't allow in my games (and I have been running gestalt games for a few years, now) is this: You can't make a Wizard/Fighter for example, and then, when you meet the Prerequisites for a PrC based on your wizard levels, take levels in that class on the fighter side of your build. People try this to gain caster levels above there class levels. This doesn't actually work, as the rules of gestalt still apply, but people will argue that it does give them double casting. It does not, but still. Easier this way. If you bring it up at the beginning, though, you should be able to not have this problem. |

Obviously you don't get an obscene caster level, but taking Wizard levels when the Prestige Class levels don't progress spellcasting is a good way to make Prestige Classes that are normally crap viable. |
| Grizzled Gryphon05-13-07, 02:04 PM | I simply don't allow it as it wasn't addressed before we started playing, so the players are convinced that taking a PrC that gives spellcasting progression is a different progression than the base class. So, you should get both. I tried to explain it to them that that isn't how it works, but they wouldn't listen. Come to think of it, though, I have new players now, as I have moved, and they haven't tried it. I should talk to them about it before it does come up. I don't think they will have the same problem. |
| Serge_P05-13-07, 03:52 PM | Can a monster (using SS rules) have Gestalt Something/Monster class? And when finnished of the monster class, can they take a prestige class ion that "Class slot"? |
| Grizzled Gryphon05-13-07, 04:13 PM | It isn't specifically mentioned, but I allow it in my games. IF I allow monsters, of course. |

This sort of thing is the basis for bait-and-switch tricks with the Chameleon, considering that the class has a ban on using most of its abilities as prerequisites...but no such ban on applying a benefit to said abilities if you can otherwise qualify. |
| Grizzled Gryphon05-16-07, 11:16 AM | Now, see, that isn't even right... Invisible little guy throwing Meteor Swarms around like kids throw rocks... What is wrong with you, man? That is just twisted. |

| Morwen05-16-07, 12:43 PM | Can a monster (using SS rules) have Gestalt Something/Monster class? The problem with allowing this is that it completely nullifies the drawbacks of taking monster classes (level adjustment and normally-inferior-to-class-levels racial hit dice). I think I would allow it if either all or half of the level adjustment covers both sides.. |
