I've been playing since back when elf was a class, so the option of generating my own gestalted monstrous creation really appealed to me. Also, I tend to play with a bevy of players who care more about their stats and cool **** than the roleplay value (and susequently have been looking for a new group). But, somehow, this had derived a question that was left unanswered... I think... in Unearthed Arcana...

Simply put, when you take a creature for your base race with a level mod, how does that effect Gestalting. The way we reasoned was that for the 2 or 3 levels your race consumes, you get only one class to pick from, while afterwards it becomes a normal gestalt.... and to me, this seems slightly over powered. (Though, we found if we don't do this, level-mod characters are next to worthless in gestalted campaigns)

Watch me make no sense at all. Any ideas?

I dont have UA but heres what I've understood.

If your playing in a game were the DM is starting you at first level then you cant have a pc with a LA at all and your gestalte would be best of each class BaB Saves ect.

If your playing in a game were the DM is starting you at second level then you could have a pc with a LA of +1. Then your gestalte level would be first. (1 class level + LA 1 = 2 total levels.)

I hope that helps.

Having been playing nearly-exclusively Gestalted for several years, we've found that the only workable solution is the most obvious: Change level adjusted races into Racial Character Classes, and then gain levels in 'em.

Drow, for example, would have two levels of "Drow". If you're making a second level Gestalted Drow Rogue, you'd be Rogue 2 // Drow 2. If you're making a 4th level Gestalted Drow Rogue // Sorcerer, you might go Sorcerer 4 // Rogue 2 / Drow 2. For the Drow abilities that work based on "Class levels" or "Hit Dice", you don't count levels in Drow - Your "Drow" side has only 2 "levels" on it.

If you're also of a template, the template goes on the same side as your base race Level Adjust (if any). So you're the Drow Sorcerer 4 / Rogue 1 // Drow 2 / Half-Dragon 3

Savage Species, while Three-Dot-Oh, has a number of pages devoted to "Racial Character Classes"; the "Races Of..." books do, as well, for new races introduced in there.

One important thing to remember is that the Feats of a Racial Character Class are actually "Hit Dice" feats (1, +1 every 3 HD), not "Class features" of the race.

Balanced out this way, even the most level-adjusted races came out pretty balanced next to their non-adjusted human friends.

(Note: The "//" is to separate 'sides' of Gestalt advancement.)

I disagree. Savage Progressions/Racial Classes still take into account LA, as there are levels in which the HD do not increase. Therefor, Gestalt still circumvents the largest balance factor of these which is the reduced HD.

I've allowed racial HD to be Gestalt'd, but not LA, and I've also used having LA be split on each side of the Gestalt, rounded up. (So an LA +7 essentially has an LA +4)

You're right; that does sound better.
