How much of a boost would it be for a CR or LA for a gestault in a normal setting. I'm considering using a Gestault character as a villain in one of my games.

Theres no hard and fast rule for it, since it varies greatly based on level and classes used. I'd say just use your best judgement (maybe compare him to some monsters/NPCs to get an idea of what his CR could be)

Pulling this out of nowhere, I'd say level and a half would be a good CR, so a 10th level Fighter/Rogue gestalt would be 15 CR.

Never played gestalt myself, but the number seen on this board seems to be +1 or +2 LA.

I like the +1 or +2 version, my players won't be Gestault, only a few "boss" villains. I think I'll use a mix +1 until around level 5 and +2 after that

Just give the players some extra xp when defeating him.

problem them is the party might not defeat him... he needs to figure out what lvl of gestalt would be an appropriate challnge for them.

Yeah, I'm aiming on using the guy for a recurring villain

The best way we found to deal with it was to apply a 30% XP penalty to the Gestalt Character. That way it slowly falls further and further behind the other characters, eventually being only at 16th level while the rest are at 20, and it seems to balance out nicely.

I'd prefer LA to XP penalty because it balances out much easier, I've decided on a progressive LA increase similar to Bloodlines.
