give sorcerers a free dragon bloodline? [Archive] - Wizards Community

ok, everyone seems to think that sorcerers are underpowered. and the more i think about it, THEY ARE!

so i thought of giving anybody who plays a sorcerer in my games a free intermediate dragon bloodline of their choice. this will make sorcerers just a little more powerful and unique. if a character picks red, silver, or gold and wants to spend 1 level to increase the ability to major, that's fine too. he just has to buy it by 12th level.

i figure sorcerers are supposed to have dragon BLOOD anyway.

comments please?

How unique can it be to dicate that ALL sorc in your game are descendents of dragons?... No freak of nature? No fey/celestial/fiendish bloodlines? :(

About as unique that all paladins are good and all druids love nature?

I agree with Runestar. It is theorized that sorcerers have dragon blood.
Also, only in a sense of numbers are sorcerers slightly underpowered. If you think about it, Wizards have to super maintain their spellbook. If they don't buy the spells from scrolls for their spellbook, they loose effectiveness. If you multiclass with a cleric, you make a much better necromancer than any wizard. You need no spellbook, can rebuke undead quite well.
But anyway, what do you mean, free? That is silly.

Actually I've done something similar and granted them their choice of a minor bloodline that makes sense for the Sorcerer. This means that the better bloodlines are basically treated as one level lower for use.

The definition of paladin is Lawful and Good, and Druids, by definition worship nature. Sorcerors by definition have spontaneous spellcasting, but as to where it comes from that is not set in stone rulewise.

Unless the DM wants it so. And considering that with each new book spontaneous spellcasting has been more and more linked with draconic heritage I see no reason to object against that.

Book of Exalted Deeds linked it to Celestials, too.

Instead of a bloodline (lossing level as a caster is always bad) it may fit better if you give all soc the Draconic Heritage feat from Complete arcana as a free feat.

Perhaps 3/4 of them, spread across levels.
Level 5-10-15-20: Choose one bonus Draconic feat, or the likes.

Sounds good to me.
Whenever the wizard gets a bonus feat, the sorcerer gets a free draconic feat.

Sorcerers in mine don't, they get the minor bloodline benefits without the level cost. If they want more than the minor they need to spend levels but treat them as 1 level less. Of course the Bloodline needs to be chosen at creation with the DM's aproval.

Instead of tying them to Dragons, I allowed the sorcerer characters to pick any minor bloodline (provided they could explain why sorcery arose from the background).

I;ve done 2 things in various games.
1. Advancing the BAB 1 progression level
2. Bonus feats in levels where Wizards get crafting skills
3. Add a couple class kills (spot, survival, whatever depending on where your sorceror is from)

Overall... I don't feel Sorcerors are underpowered. Given the choice they are my second favorite after Warmages, who can be ridiculous.

Same as what I said, just do away with the level cost of the minor bloodline and reduce the Intermediate and Major ones to be treated as Minor and Intermediate respecively for level costs
