What do you guys think about the rules for Halving AC bonuses of Armour and giving DR instead?

We're contemplating the variant but aren't sure.

We are using the Armor as DR system from Iron Heroes and the players love it. Basically, armor offers no AC bonus, but offers the same number as DR, although variable. For example, Full plate armor offers 0 AC, but gives 1d8 DR. The players like the variability because it feels more random and realistic, and I like it as DM because it helps with more colorful descriptions. If the fighter only rolls a 1 for his full plate DR, you can describe it as the foe finding a crease in the armor and delivering a nasty gash. On the other hand, when the fighter rolls an 8 for his DR, you can describe that the same wicked slash crashed right into his breastplate and he didn't feel a thing.

We use quite a few variants for combat to increase the tactics, realism, and descriptions: defense opposed roll, facing variant, and Armor as DR all help to paint a more vivid picture of the battle, which I love as a DM.
