okay, here's the deal....

i've got me a dilemma....i'm using the class defense bonus option on p. 110 of UA but i've modified it...

instead of the normal way they have it, with the "if u take one level of fighter and seventeen levels of sorcerer, you get the fighter's +12 bonus instead of the sorcerer's +8" to this...

"if you take one level of fighter and 17 levels of sorcerer, you get a +7 bonus, b/c sorcerer is ur highest class, and u've got 17 lev's in it, that nets you....a +7 bonus" or "you've got 7 levels of fighter and 6 levels of monk...your highest level is fighter..which is seven levels, getting you...a +8 bonus"

i hope i've drawn that out clearly enough...ok here's my problem...is a duelist in column A? a duelist does not gain any armor proficiency, which by the book would place that character in column A...but i've got me a player that also has two levels in fighter, four or so in rogue, one in swashbuckler, and 7 in duelist...so under my system which column and which bonus do they use? what i'm thinkin is that he'd be in column A with 7 levels...not in column D with 18 levels...

another thing i was thinking of to help fix this would be to make it so if u had levels in any classes that were in the same column, those levels would stack...so if you were bard 6/rogue 7, you would be at 13th lev in column B, for a +7 bonus

looking back at the system again, it seems as if what my duelist player is trying to do is exactly what the system was made for, but i'm not sure i like that. is it reasonable to change the system the way i have? i really don't like the idea of a 17th lev sorcerer getting, because of one level soooo long ago, the 18th level fighter's armor class bonus...they seem to be totally different characters...

thanks for the input, and to my player, please let's let everybody else put their say in this...thx buddy.

I can see what you're trying to do with the system, but I don't agree with it. My disagreement is in your logic, not a fanatical devotion to "what's in the rules is gospel".

Think about it this way....

You take one level of fighter, in which you learn to defend yourself. Then you begin a more mystical journey of your life, and spend the majority of it opening up the secrets of the arcane. Does this mean that you forget what you learned as a fighter? If so, shouldn't you also loose you're +1 to BAB from the fighter level, along with the feats that you gained as a fighter, and the bonuses to Saving Throws?

The simple fact of the matter is that if you are using the Class Defense Bonus system, then you are assuming that the class teaches you not only to attack, but also to deflect incomming attacks. If you're not going to make them loose their other bonuses for taking one level of fighter, then you shouldn't make them loose their Defense Bonus either.

Besides that, as you can already see, it's causing confusion and problems in your game to monkey with the rules like this. Sometimes realism is just not worth it.

ok, i kinda see that, but as you go for that whole mystical journey thing, are you still working on your combat awareness? because it seems to me that the increase in column D would represent the focus of someone who is constantly working on their melee abilities, while column A would better represent the more arcane focus of said character. no, you wouldn't completely forget about what you had learned in your days as a fighter, but you also wouldn't be actively improving those processes either.

thx for the input, i appreciate your perspective, and will take it into consideration...does anybody else feel the same way? or do you side with my player, or do you see things the way i do?

thx much:D

I've tossed the multiclass defense system as it stands out the window and replaced it with the d20 Star Wars method, where you progress in your old value + the new score - 2.

Example:

A 3rd level sorcerer has a +3 bonus. He takes one level of fighter and gains the fighter's defense bonus at 1st class level (+6) and subtracts two, for a +4 bonus to his current Defense upon advancing to Sor3/Ftr1, resulting in a +7, the exact same score as if you use the standard method presented in UA. However, instead of just advancing in column D for the rest of his adventuring career, he progresses based on the levels of each class he has, Sorcerer at standard rate and Fighter at -2.
