| bawb4411-01-06, 06:51 PM | OK the group i play with and part time dm wants to play a gestalt campaign (or with us three times and quit). but here is my question one player wants to be a bardarian, ya know bar/bard can he use his bard songs in a rage in the middle of battle. the phb says the bardic music requires a standard action to maintain, how does that work in combat. please help. |
| Thomar_of_Uointer11-02-06, 03:38 AM | He cannot, the barbarian's rage description does not allow use of the Perform skill or anything that requires concentration, which covers bardic music. However, he can initiate bardic music as a standard action and then enter a rage. Bardic music lasts for 5 rounds after you stop. |

| Bard-of-all-trades11-08-06, 12:00 AM | I beg to differ. A Bardarian can use Bardic Music and Rage at the same time if done correctly. Rage (Ex): A barbarian can fly into a rage a certain number of times per day. … While raging, a barbarian cannot use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skills (except for Balance, Escape Artist, Intimidate, and Ride), the Concentration skill, or any abilities that require patience or concentration, nor can he cast spells or activate magic items that require a command word, a spell trigger (such as a wand), or spell completion (such as a scroll) to function. He can use any feat he has except Combat Expertise, item creation feats, and metamagic feats. Bardic Music: Once per day per bard level, a bard can use his song or poetics to produce magical effects on those around him (usually including himself, if desired). ... Each ability requires both a minimum bard level and a minimum number of ranks in the Perform skill to qualify; if a bard does not have the required number of ranks in at least one Perform skill, he does not gain the bardic music ability until he acquires the needed ranks. Starting a bardic music effect is a standard action. Some bardic music abilities require concentration, which means the bard must take a standard action each round to maintain the ability. Even while using bardic music that doesn’t require concentration, a bard cannot cast spells, activate magic items by spell completion (such as scrolls), or activate magic items by magic word (such as wands). Inspire Courage (Su): A bard with 3 or more ranks in a Perform skill can use song or poetics to inspire courage in his allies (including himself ), bolstering them against fear and improving their combat abilities. To be affected, an ally must be able to hear the bard sing. The effect lasts for as long as the ally hears the bard sing and for 5 rounds thereafter. An affected ally receives a +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 morale bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls. At 8th level, and every six bard levels thereafter, this bonus increases by 1 (+2 at 8th, +3 at 14th, and +4 at 20th). Inspire courage is a mind-affecting ability. Now after reading the ability descriptions you may wonder “Isn't that what has already been posted?” I say no. First what your player needs to make sure of is that they start the Bardic Music first. The best music would be Inspire Courage which would buff the Rage. Starting a Bardic Music is a standard action, but sustaining it is not. In fact, Inspire Courage does not require concentration or a Perform check to use. The character can then enter Rage after starting the Bardic Music. They can also do this because it is a Bardic ability, not a Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based ability. To answer your original question, yes, but in the proper order. Start singing first and rage away. In fact, it would be a cool role-playing hook for this character to use singing as a way of entering Rage. |

| bawb4411-08-06, 11:21 AM | Player and Dm arguing back and forth for hours thus ruining our game time (as we only get 1 day a week and only a few hours in that day). So it will stop the arguing and let us get back to game. Yay thanks again. |
