| sindar08-07-05, 11:24 PM | Personally I like the idea of Level based defense but at the same time I can see why others like the Idea of armor. Here's my idea why not make a level based defense systems thats a series of feats that players could have instead Armor proficences. It could represent a differnt learned style or what not. I like what someone suggested of making three progressions that match the three save progressions (Poor, Average, Good), each feat would move you from progession to the next. Poor progession: 30% of your current level Average progression: 45% of your current level Good Progression: 60% of your current level (all are rounded down) Suggestions, ideas or just general feedback |
| Bohica08-08-05, 10:09 AM | I run a very low magic campaign and have implemented a Base Defense Bonus to substitute for the many magical items that PCs are expected to have. Without it I have found my PCs unable to stand up to creatures that they would normally have been expected to be successful against. The BDB (Base Defense Bonus) progresses at half the speed the class BAB. So at 20th level your melee types would have a +10, your clerical and stealthy types would have +7, and your wizard types would have a +5. Bohica P.S. My group does not use the Monk as a class. |

| sindar08-08-05, 04:47 PM | Question Under your system why wear armor at higher levels and what would stop a wizard from a 1 level dip into fighter to get all the defensive goodness and still be able to cast all his spells without fail. I think we all admit the class defense as presented in UA is very unbalanced. |

I think we all admit the class defense as presented in UA is very unbalanced. Well the assumption I have with the setting I am creating is different from vanilla, magic-laden D&D so this system is compensatory for the trade of of being unlikely to ever find +4 plate at any level, no torcs/bracers/belts/headbands/etc. of stat increase are readily available anywhere. There are no magemarts because item creation will most likely be tied to power points of some kind and when a mage or priest desires to create an item away from such an area he or she will suffer extreme XP and personal wealth costs for doing so. Only temp items are outside of this prohibition and difficulty. In the setting I am crafting the PC and NPC will have access to only 1/2 of the magical gear and equipment. Mages, clerics, sorcerers and any other core primary spellcaster class need prerequisites scores of 12-13 to qualify. PCs will of course have these numbers in at least the primary stat with any reasonable rolling or point buy system. However, these methods, along with a few others I am implementing, will remove about 50%-60% of spellcasters from the world. The great majority will be of low to middling power while the great will be truly great. Just like the good ol' days you get your magic by questing or creating but because creating is challenging it is a real accomplishment to make a nice staff. No one sell wonderous things unless the DM has a plot hook tied into it somewhere. Plus the costs will be twice as much in gold. Chris |
| sindar08-09-05, 08:42 PM | I think my setting would be considered heavy magic thought and so I basically wanted level based defense as an option for charaters who would rather not go around looking like a tin can at low levels. Oh and heres what I mean when I say heavy magic Magic items market prices reduced by 25% (and there for there creation and Xp costs), the artificer is a core class and create magic item is now a feat that functions similar to the artificers create items Picture and enjoy |
