| User512711-14-06, 12:51 AM | I'm toying with some ideas for a high magic campaign. a campaign where characters tend to have alot of access to magic. alot. so I was thinking something along the lines of semi-gestalting everything. its a variant I read in a book. I was wondering if any one was familiar with it. Basically a character would have the spell casting ability of a full caster at half their HD. now to prevent some obvious abuse. this caster class must be tracked seperatly. must be arcane (since its a high arcane campaign), can't be used to qualify for feats, prcs, etc. the class only grants spell casting and CL (the CLs don't stack with other classes). I'm also thinking that NPC classes would choose adept instead of wizard. and I'm not sure if I want to limit this idea to just arcane magic. since its possible divine and psionic magic could be pretty strong. any thoughts? any one try something like this? any forseeable problems that I can errata and nip in the butt before players abuse it? |

Now, about your idea (1 CL/ 2 HD). . . - You might limit it to arcane or divine (or psionics) depending on something, like oneīs culture to explain it. Could be better then limiting it to a single thing or opening to eveything. - How will you work with spellcasters? Would these "bonus" CLs stack with normal CLs from the class? If yes, what would a caster do after 12 lvl (when with the "bonus" CLs heīd reach 9th circle), would he go epic or mayhaps get bonus slots for casting in all circles? Also, imagine the worse, a dual spellcaster gone mystic theurge, if i can consider it, it might happen. - An idea iīm using for a high-magic using race in my actual campaign: Magic itens and UMD as a normal trait of the race/society: That is, their casters are expert in crafting itens but poor at "standard" casting (artificers from eberron); and anyone can use the itens with little training (instead of DCs, their itens, for them, have minimum UMD ranks as pre-reqs). With this they use magic not unlike technology, using it to deal with their problems or to ease the ways of doing things - like i believe one would do with magic were it common enough. I havenīt DMed a high magic game yet, am adding this race to show my players a view about it to latter ask their opinion about it. Yet i ponder that 1 CL / 2 HD might be a little too much, being easy to abuse - using normal gestalt rules would be better if you aim that way, since it needs no adjustment. Maybe a little of both, a natural bonus to UMD for magic iten usage and some bonus CL would be more balanced (1/3 or 1/4) - or maybe different bonuses for spellcasters and non spellcasters (although you might need give something else for spellcasters for balance purpuse... or maybe not) Wither way, iīm just barking around now. :P Hope any of these be of some help to you... Good luck. |

I'm thinking of restricting this to jsut spontaneuos casters. that way some one can't just gain and insane amount of spells. as well, I'm thinking that the adept npc class would be nice, since they are limited in spells and what not. but mainly for a high arcane world, i'd use sorcerer class spells. this way a farmer can also cast a few minor cantrips to help his farming. (1HD monsters will at least get 0-level cantrips) |
