For everyone whose used the hit point/damge variants from UA:
How do they fare?


I'm looking for a gritty combat system and a heroic combat system.

I am using a wounds/vitality system and have encounter no problems yet.

For a heroic combat system you can just stick to the standard, that is waht it is.

For a real gritty combat system, use a simple system of wounds and penalties depending on the amount of HP you have lost, and to take it a step further, create or find a d100 table that can randomly generate body disabling/maiming/additional damage for criticals. Limb maiming criticals are always good :-).

Or play Rolemaster from Iron Crown Enterprises... far and away the most in depth (read: complex) combat and damage systems currently available.

Runequest / Stormbringer or another Basic Role Play rpg handles gritty combat pretty well, while being simple.

Try the grim and gritty rules by Ken hood. They are designed to plug into regular D20 so you dont have to adjust much. Their fairly gritty without being too complex.
