| Jynx31609-21-05, 09:08 PM | I'm working on my own setting for my group. One of the decisions I made, just to make it slightly different then normal, is that only classes that are Primarily spellcasters (Wizards, Sorcerers, Wu Jen, Shugenja, etc, so on and so forth) have access to magic. Clerics still have access to their spells, but don't look at them as magic, but divine power given them by their gods. Anyways, to compensate for the lost spells, the core classes that lost spell casting ability were given a new ability. The only one I need help with is the Paladin. Any suggestions? |
| Lawrence09-21-05, 10:46 PM | Use the Complete Warrior version of the ranger and Paladin? They're designed to be only mildly magical, as far as abilities went. I can't say what they get, but if you have the book that'd help, or find a copy at a store and memorize what they changed. Mainly they get a few extra abilities to make up for the lost. |
| Tyler Do'Urden09-22-05, 12:33 AM | Doesn't Unearthed Arcana (you know, the book this board is named after) have a variant paladin that doesn't get spells? I can't check because mine's on loan, but I'm pretty sure it's there. |
| Jynx31609-22-05, 10:06 PM | Ok. I've checked my copy of UA, and there is no non-spellcasting Paladin in its midst. And, I don't currently have my copy of CW, so I can't check it. However, I do have my copy of Swashbuckling Adventures (d20 version of 7th Sea, by AEG), and it does have a non-spellcasting variant. In place of spells, they gain Religious Fury. 4th level, once a day, Cha mod bonus to hit and damage against those who do not share devotion to the Paladin's god. Can make a full movement and a full attack, but is considered flat-footed. Goes up one use per day every 4th level (twice at 8th, 3 times at 12th, etc). However, a co-worker of mine made a suggestion. Use the Paladins from Diablo II's auras. Now, I have the d20 Diablo II book. Does either of these sound good to other people? |
| fnord09-22-05, 10:23 PM | If you have UA, why not ban paladins as a base class and use the Prestige Paladin instead? Problem solved. |
| Jynx31609-23-05, 09:50 AM | Because the Prestige Paladin has Spellcasting, which is what I'm prohibiting. Not the Paladin itself. |
| Josheva09-23-05, 11:07 PM | How about the ability to at will (infinitely per day) use the spell like abilities guidance, virtue, resistance, and light. Would be like their gods answering their prayers Also look at the saint template from the book of exalted deeds. Might be able to add some of their abilities to paladin class. |
