cool idea, but too expensive for what they do to be practical in most situations. i like the option though; any ideas on how a player could realistically use them?

The way I understand it, they're meant to be used on the fly to add a little more to a spell you already have prepared. Thus they're a cheap way to keep a metamagic spell on hand without wasting the high level slot or spending the extra for a scroll.

For a wizard your choices are, say:
a) Keep a 5th level slot tied up for an empowered fireball every day.
b) Spend a grand on a scroll.
c) Spend a couple hundred on some rare sulfur and just pull it out when you need it.

Granted b) saves you a 3rd level spell slot as well, but if you're going to prepare a fireball anyway...
