I don't have unearthed arcana and I heard about a system for reducing LA. How does it work?

Basically, at high levels, the abilities you get for having a LA is diluted amongst all the other abilities high level characters possess. Having +2 natural armor is a big advantage at 1st level, but by the time you hit 15th level, it is a small, almost negligible advantage.

To offset this, once players hit a certain level (dependent upon the amount of LA they have), they can use XP to buy off the level adjustment. They end up losing a level, but they don't have to count one level from their LA as a level anymore. So they stay at the same power and abilities.

But now, since they are considered one level lower than they used to be, they will gain XP faster. Thus, over time, instead of having their abilities put them behind an entire level from other characters who don't have LA, the abilities will only put them behind by an ever decreasing fraction of a level.

It's a pretty cool idea and my players are using it to good advantage.

One thing that irks me about this is that it shafts those with high LA. What about just reducing LA every 3 or so class levels?
