OK... I've read through them a couple of times, and I'm quite confused...

Let's say I have a LA +4 race, I understood that I cannot buy off it's LA till level 15... but... How many XP do I have to sacrifice?, do I have to do it more than once?

Thanks in advance for the help.

If your LA is +4, the first chance you get to buy off LA is at class level 12 (you'll then be ECL 16).

You have to spend enough experience to put you one Effective Character Level lower (so, down to ECL 15). That will buy off one point of LA (Making you a character with 12 class levels and a +3 LA). The actual formula for the amount of XP to spend is listed on page 18 of Unearthed Arcana.

You have to repeat the process for each point of LA you wish to buy off. For a LA +4 character, the next time you'll be eligible to buy off a point of LA is at class level 21, then 27, and finally 30.

also remember that racial HDs don't count for when you can buy off your LA.

let's suppose you have 2 racial HDs and +4 LA:

when you gain your 4(LA) x 3 = 12th class level, that is 2(racial HD)+4(LA)+12(class levels)=18th Equivalent Character Level, at 153,000 XP, you immediately give up 17,000 XP and reduce LA by 1, to +3. You now will be of 17th ECL instead, with 2HD+3LA+12 class levels

with other 3(current LA) x 3 = 9 class levels, at 26th Equivalent Character Level, at 325,000 XP, you buy off for 25,000 XP another LA point, reducing you to LA +2, at 25 ECL

with other 2x3=6 class levels, at 31st ECL, at 465,000 XP you spend 30,000 XP and reduce your LA to +1, ending at 30th ECL

with other 1x3=3 class levels, at 33rd ECL, at 528,000 XP you spend 32,000 XP and reduce your LA to +0, ending at 32rd ECL with 496,000 XP.

from that point, you follow normal progression... if you ever get that far...

clear?

Just a question from the other aspect of buying-off LA:

Say I am a Phrenic Human Fighter 5. I am therefore 5 class levels +2 LA.

Now, I gain 7000xp and is eligible to get into ECL 8 and be Fighter 6 +2LA.

However, I give up that 7000xp to reduce my LA by 1. That would make me Fighter 6 +1LA, correct?

Now, from what I see, I did not really lose anything at all with that buyback. I still gained a level (and the extra feat and the hp boost and all that). It seems to be a pure advantage, not a disadvantage. Your level still went up and you really gave up nothing.

Am I reading something wrong there?

Yes: LA buyoff rules are in fact there in order to lighten LA creatures of the weight of their LAs; for them, there are no disadvantages for using them.

Thanks. That clears things up for me.
