How I'm using Defense bonus + Armor as DR [Archive] - Wizards Community

Here's my system for working the DR armor and Defense bonus variants into my game. I'm tinkering with the mechanics a bit, so I'd like some opinions on whether this would work or not before we start in with it. So here's the set-up:

The Armor as DR mechanics work exactly as in the book. I played around with the Defense bonus a bit.

For multiclassing, I'm going to use the Star Wars version where you add the new class' defense bonus -2 to your current score. That just makes more sense to me.

As far as the interplay between the two rules go:

Firstly, I'm using the option where armor overrides Defense whether its higher or not, so that its actually a real choice whether to avoid attacks with Defense or soak up damage with armor.

Secondly, there is no +6 through +12 progression anymore. The characters proficient with all armor use the light-and-medium +4 throught +10 progression. I decided to give this a whirl to encourage traditionally heavily-armored classes like fighters, paladins, and clerics to continue to use armor, as their defensive capabilities without it are downgraded to the status of the other less-armored warrior/divine spellcasting types.

What do you guys think about that?

Here is how I did it.

I got rid of the defense bonus of the armor, and only kept the damage reduction. The Damage Reduction only applies to wound points.

I was thinking of a way to use both variants as well. So far keep the Armor as Damage Reduction as written. I know I'll probably tinker with the Defense bonus a bit but here it goes. The defense bonus is considered a dodge bonus to AC, so if you're flatfooted, guess what? It will stack with the Armor bonus, but only up to half of it's max dex bonus.. Or maybe half of the max dex bonus +1 so the heavy armor wearers may use some of it? What do you think? As for the multiclass defense bonus stacking? well no idea?

Well riceisnice, I'm not familiar enough with the d20 SW to quite know exactly what you're talking about? Can you plase clarify it a bit?

I wouldn't make the change in calling it a dodge bonus. Just keep it called a defense bonus that doesn't stack with armor bonus.

It already stacks with touch attacks, so why make it stack with flat footed attacks? I think your giving it too much power.

Your armor bonus can still apply to the flatfooted AC of a character, something I must have missed in the combination of the systems, DUH! So a flat footed 1st level cleric wearing a brest plate and has a dex of 12 would be 14 with DR of 2/-, touch would be 17 and normal would be 17. All in all this helps the players outeven more, and is something I didn't include. I will change that.

Anyways, I don't think you need to toy with defenese bonus' since they are already fairly reflective of their classes.

I'd use the Max Dex bonus for armour as the max class defense bonus.
