ok first of hi, second i am not sure this is the right place and if i am i am sorry if you could please redirect me it would be great. ok down to business, anyone ever play or remember the old tsr games shadowrun and earthdawn? the reason i ask is I just picked up unearthed arcana and a few of the variant rules strike me as completly wrong and make me wanna set the writers on fire. the contacts, reputation, faults, paranoyas (sp), even the spell fires of dis. there all ripped from either shadowrun and earthdawn! how i know TSR has been assimilated into WoTC but come on. The really annoying thing is the tables even most of the descriptions are word for word from the books on shadowrun and earthdawn. anyone else think this is as wrong as i do? any views or possible explanations? thanks again for your time laterz

Actually, Reputation, which has been seen in many games, comes, in most part from d20 Modern (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20modern) and the (discontinued, I belive), Wheel of Time RPG.

Flaws (not faults) is such a part of RPG history that I can't belive that one would say that Shadowrun would be their origionator - just about every point based system has them, along with many of the skill based and level based systems.

Sanity (not paranoias, which are a type of insanity, and don't really see much in the way of rules support by their lonesome), comes from Call of Cthulhu (http://www.chaosium.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=41&products_id=359) , which is a grand old game.

As for contacts, this too is a concept that has been around for years - and I've never actually seen a game of Shadowrun where a similar system came into play.

Finally, the Incantation, Fires of Dis works of such an entirely diffrent casting system than either Earthdawn, or Shadowrun, and utilizes elements not seen in either (a burning hell, pit fiends, ect). I'm not going to say that it might not have existed in Shadowrun (or Earthdawn, I guess), as my grasp of absolutly every book out there is somewhat non-existant, but if it did, it's not likely that they're anything more than spells with a similar name - and, given that Dis comes from Dante's work (I belive, mind you - just going from memory), it makes the spell name fairly generic, and it's not unreasonable to see it pop up in two diffrent RPGs.

Oh, yes, finally. TSR had nothing to do with Earthdawn or Shadowrun. They were owned by the (now defunct ) compay FASA - I belive a corperation named Wizkids has picked up the Shadowrun label, and it seems to still be alive and kicking - actually, if I wasn't already overcommited on RPGs, I'd be looking to start up a game at some point in the near future...

well one could make that assumption but when i look at my shadowrun book i see that most of the tables are mearely a reprint, and the faults yes they are very common but if i whip out a shadowrun sourcebook it lists lets see here the same faults and flaws ect. differing effects but nothing to different a skilled DM couldent convert on the fly. and for the more experenced players of shadowrun dosent the tainted caster just scream atlzan blood mage? anyway i digress i was just voicing my view on the subject, and i understand many systems are common i just thought it was odd to see such a.... dedicated and authentic reprint of information maby it orginated before that i dont know i just thought it was odd. anywayz to all a good night and a good lauf laterz

well thats kinda of true if you follow the trail of parent companeys shadowrun was owned by fasa witch was owned by wizkids a child company of WoTC witch i believe purchased tsr or was it wizkids that purched it it eludes me at the moment, but something i do remember when i did the actual tracking of who owned what during the fasa tsr WoTC wizkids situation nearely everything was owned by WoTC either directly or through a parent company the only things i can think of off the top of my head not owned by WoTC is interactive imagination there may be others but like i said they elude me at the moment in short the main point i wanted to make was wizkids is and has been owned by WoTC.

Actually, WizKids was never owned by TSR or WotC. It was an independent corporation until Topps bought it out last year.
