For one thing I don't think that losing sanity for most spells (except for corrupted and sanctified spells) would work with any campaign I'd run. Neither will seeing many things, though they fit into the description of commonplace. One idea would be how would sanity work in a Planescape campaign. Considering the fact the outsiders are commonly seen on the streets of Sigil, I would envision sanity loss coming more from traumatic events and completely alien environments and more unique situations. Certainly anything involving the Far Realm would involve sanity loss. And then there's the question of how would Xaositects and the Bleak Cabal handle sanity since they generally are already insane. In many cases I think it works better in Ravenloft when you drop the rules on Fear, Horror and Madness checks and just use the sanity rules. |

The rules in the UA were almost photocopied from the CoC, so guess which source of inspiration won? Personally, I like the Ravenloft rules better. A simple save with a DC based on the character's personality, experiences, etc. Thus, a pool of blood has a low DC check and fighter types get a bonus to the save. An outsider (very uncommon in typically low magic / etc Ravenloft and insidious in CoC) ranks high for sanity saves for most, but outsiders and planeswalkers would either require no save or gain a bonus to the save, respectively. |

I personally think if you use sanity rules in a normal campaign, you just have to fudge everything and decide for yourself when the PCs make checks. The rules are just guidlines. You are the DM, afterall. |
