To pay off this hp debit you'll roll for HP as normal but don't gain extra HP until you finish paying off the debit. For example A level 3 rogue rolls a 3 and 6 for his HP roll meaning he has paid off 9 points of hp debit but didn't gain any extra hp. Now when he levels he rolls a 4, but since he still has 1 hp to pay off he will only gain 3 HP and would now have a total of 19 HP + Con modifier. New HP rolls for classes D4 is normal D6 is now D4 +2 each level then add con modifier D8 is now D6 +2 each level then add con modifier D10 is now D8 +2 each level then add con modifier D12 is now D10 +2 each level then add con modifier |

| IronMouse04-24-07, 05:22 PM | Instead of simply +10, you could use the con score. But I like the idea. |
| DinwathSereglin04-24-07, 07:57 PM | Using CON score or full HP plus a free toughness could both be a good alternative. |
| Ics04-24-07, 08:17 PM | The d4 is kinda getting shafted here imho. I'd change the d4 to d2+2 to keep with the pattern. |
| MCage04-24-07, 10:03 PM | I have to second the useing the con to pay off the debt. But i do like that idea, i tend to like high end campaigns but i still use low levels (1-5) as sort of teaching levels when i play with new folk (omg im so making a "newfolk" race now) so giving then a HP bonus would be nice to help them live when they make obvious tactical errors. |

| Millennium04-25-07, 01:26 PM | Have you ever played first level adventures? First level is lethal but it's also the learning levels of the game. Yes, but I don't see how this helps first-level adventurers. You end up with the same amount of HP at first level than you did before, only now you've got this "debt" to deal with in later levels. |
| Nathreet04-25-07, 02:21 PM | I think he means you get an extra +10 HP at 1st level, but you pay it back later. Purpose seems to be to help fragile 1st-3rd level characters. IMO you already get +10 HP of unconciousness, which does an excellent job at lower levels (and doesn't do so much at higher levels). Though in a solo campaign it doesn't help. As for the changes in HP rolls, it seems needlessly complicated. It basically averages out to +1 HP per level, although it keeps you from rolling either a 1 or max HP. |
| Geoste04-25-07, 02:36 PM | New HP rolls for classes D4 is normal D6 is now D4 +2 each level then add con modifier D8 is now D6 +2 each level then add con modifier D10 is now D8 +2 each level then add con modifier D12 is now D10 +2 each level then add con modifier You stole this house rule from me. ;) Actually, I handle the D4 as 1d3+1. I did this because rolling a 1 HPs really suck. |

I would use either one of these, but I wouldn't just treat the d4 as d4, if the other die types get a boost. All in all, the idea is nice. It give you a solid boost to your HP at ~ levels 1-4, and after that, the boost goes away. It can help with staying power at these lower levels. |
| LadyAlaria04-25-07, 04:06 PM | 1. Make the d4 into d2+2. 2. Accept the accolades - this is an excellent way to make the low levels survivable - especially for the spellcasters - without unbalancing anything. The classes that are helps most are the ones that need it at that level. And it mechanically makes a little more sense than fighters having roughly triple the HP as wizards. |
