I think I'm confusing myself here, borrowed a copy from a friend and it's 5:30am but here goes.

Adaptive Learning from UA p. 44 basically makes any 1 skill you want out of the 10 you choose to be class skills into a type of super class skill that no matter what classes you take gets to be considered a class skill.

So after you pick say spot (example given in UA) as your adaptive learning skill you go adventuring awhile and then take a level of wizard. Wizards don't have spot on thier class list but because it's your adaptive learning skill it still only costs 1 skill point to train and you can have your max skill level in spot at CL+3. This correct?

Sounds great and all but according to the PHB p. 59, under Multiclass Characters, it talks about skills. It says that any skill that has ever been a class skill for you is always a class skill for you and the max is your CL +3.

So say a ranger who has that same spot skill (maxed at CL +3) takes a level as a wizard, he could spend 1 skill point from his wizard level on spot and keep it at his CL+3. This correct?

So what exactly is the benifet from Adaptive Learning? It gives you the same thing that everyone else already has. Right? I'm missing something, I know I am, but could somebody please point it out to me?

If you take a level of Ranger, all the Ranger's class skills are considered class skills forever for determining total ranks. But if you then go and take a level of Wizard and buy a Ranger skill that isnt a Wizard skill it will cost you 2 points per rank, though you can buy it up to CL+3 ranks, not the Usual (CL+3)/2 ranks for cross class skills. Adaptive Learning treats one skill of your 10 as class skill for max ranks and optimal cost forever.

What AT-AT Assault said is absolutely correct, but to simplify: You you went Ranger 2 (per your example) your max ranks in Spot would be 5 (because you are a 2nd-level character. If, upon takinga third level as Wizard 1 you wanted to max out your Spot skill, your new max ran ks in spot would be 6 (as now you're 3rd level), but it would cost you two skill points to take spot from 5 ranks to 6 ranks, because Spot is a cross-class skill for wizards (in other words, each skill point you spend buys only 1/2 rank in the cross-class skill).

Human Paragon 1 lets you make one skill "Adaptive" and hence one skill point buys 1 full rank in that skill.

Personally, I feel the 1st-level human-only Able Learner feat (from Races of Destiny) blows the value of Adaptive Skill away.
