| Khementari10-26-05, 02:28 PM | until 4th edition comes out to wipe out everything on these boards =) Seriously, how many times can people have a debate about some 16 attack berserking trollish fortitude fire immune 6 handed multidextrous damage-resistant magic resisting perfectly balanced 13 prestige classed character? When did D&D turn into this and not only that, how in the world does anyone get through a gaming session whilst rummaging through 4 backpacks of sourcebooks to string together all the feats you need to be effective in such a game? I just threw out all my books. Okay-okay I did that a few months ago. I took the SRD and scrapped all the classes and spells and I'm happy to say my custom-tailormade-prefabricated-setting specific classes are shaping up quite nicely. Anyone else out there along the same lines? |
| Judging Eagle10-26-05, 07:47 PM | 4th won't be out for a long while. Partly b/c they don't need to make one. Partly b/c playtesting it won't happen anytime soon thanks to a bunch of playtesters in cali who were leaking wotc material to an other gaming company and then said it was fair game. I don't think any sane DM lets... 13 PrC builds to exist in their campaign. Most of the stuff in the CO boards tends to stay there and merely get talked about. Everyone talks about Pun-Pun. No one will ever actually play him however. Going back to basics however is a great thing to do. Don't go overboard. Also, you might want to look up your local Living Greyhawk org. LG is pretty low power; 28 pt buy, core base classes, plus a few non-core, only core feats/spells until lvl 3+; max lvl 16. Also, PrCs/feats/spells and even items are fairly restricted since getting access to a any of those has to occur in an adventure a lot of the time. Just thought you might want to know. |

No one will ever actually play him however. Not true, someone said they were going to see how far they could take it before their DM ripped his hair out, etc. However you won't be seeing that craziness anywhere near my table. :noway: Most CO builds are not intended to be playable in a game, they are merely an exercise to see how far things can be taken. Some try to stick to the RAW as close as possible, some bend the rules to favorable interpretations for the build. But most of the CO boarders are mature enough to realize that the uber builds will result in real physical violence if attempted in a game. :D |
| Gilean10-27-05, 12:39 PM | Anyone else out there along the same lines?Well, sort of, but I scrapped the entire system and homebrew new ones. They work much better for what they are done for. |
| FlameLover10-27-05, 07:28 PM | Yeah i'm sorta doing the same thing myself with this Myrkwell thing i'm working on. I scrapped all the uber-cheese that can be made with splatbooks and such and went for a minimalist game mechanic (I use some ideas and stuff but mostly it's different enough to call it a seperate RPG). And could you maybe post your classes OP? I'd like to see what you did with them ;) |
| Khementari10-28-05, 04:10 PM | FL, I was thinking about posting something up but I still need to nail down a few standard rules alterations. At the moment I am working out a hp/wound alternative and once I get that clear enough then I will think about posting something. I'm also keeping OGL in mind because I do have my own variation of the champion class from arcana evolved. It is loosely based on it since I don't own that book and only perused it once. Also, I tried to check out your link but I couldn't get through. I'll try again later but you might want to check it too. |
| FlameLover10-28-05, 07:33 PM | Ugh don't remind me... i forgot to pay my server so now my URL points to some other weird site on the host. I'll have it back in (hopefully) a few days though. Anyway sorry for derailing topic - don't bother respodning to this since it'll just take the OP's topic even more off track. Sorry. |
| weasel fierce10-29-05, 02:20 AM | D&D is like it is, because its what the masses want. If its not what you want, then you are likely better off doing your own thing, or playing a different game. My ideal D&D is the old basic / expert sets, with the AD&D class and race options in it. |
| Khementari10-31-05, 01:16 PM | I would much prefer to play with oldschool hack and slashers then this new breed of rabid min/maxers. It's almost as if they would rather see the game as a mathmatical proof they need to confirm with a "character" broken down into an equation. If you want to do math for the sake of doing math then go do math. Me? I savor the adventure and seeing a group of friends jump into the characters they create. Working together, solving the puzzle, rescuing the princess - whatever. The day people don't want to play anymore because they picked the wrong feat at 4th level is the day this game went to the birds. |
| Milo HoBo11-04-05, 05:37 PM | I just threw out all my books. Okay-okay I did that a few months ago. You got rid of them, you don't have them for sale or anything? Ohh well. You guys might like the system used by White Wolf / World of Darkenss. Their system is what I would call a closed system, no prestige classes, no splat books, just a constant set of rules that the GM and players use and sometimes ad hoc. I been wanted to play their version but the DM in my campaign has worked really hard on getting us to where we are. Maybe next time, though. WoD has a fantacy setting that is not d20. The name just isn't comming to mind. Exalted maybe? THough very different, it might offer the change, and simplicity, you want. May the dice of fate roll in your favor. |
| Khementari11-06-05, 05:23 PM | I've played most of the games systems out there. Some of us on these boards are old-timers. Other games can be fun sure, but ultimately Dungeons & Dragons is king. It's just sad that for all the promise this incarnation of the game showed it just doesn't stack up to the history behind it. It really isn't any fault of the game. The real cause is the players of the game and the culture of technology that envelops them. |
| Tyler Do'Urden11-06-05, 06:04 PM | 4th edition won't happen until they come up with a completely different way of doing things that's better in virtually every way. If you ask most players to describe their idea of what 4th edition will be like, they usually describe 3.5.2 or something; 3.5 with a few patches essentially. |
| Khementari11-07-05, 03:34 PM | They already have ways to do everything better. Do you really think Hasbro is going to let them sit around publishing setting books while they could be putting out a new system that everyone would buy even while whining about it? Does anyone remember 2nd edition? You think Skills & Powers wasn't just another edition to shell out for? How many bought 3rd edition? How many of those people also bought "3.5"? I'm telling you guys, get ready for it. 4th edition is well on it's way in one incarnation or another. |
| Milo HoBo11-10-05, 07:38 PM | Well, I did have an idea for forth edition. Make feats progressive. Kind of like this: Point blank shot: At bab +1 as 3.5 feat At bab +5 as 3.5 Improved critical feat for ranged weapon At bab +10 no longer draw attacks of oppertunity with attacks of range 30ft or less. What do you guys think? |
