| Alaina02-23-04, 01:04 AM | get one of those "Amazing" Lock Quality ones, page 84: for a lousy 200 GP the poor slob of a thief will have to get 10 Successes, all at 40 DC. even with knock counting as six successes, doesn't the cost seem a wee bit low for something this thief-baneish? the complex skill rules are a good idea overall, even thought this one detail lacked a needed extra "0" in the price. |
| Ertai Planeswalker02-23-04, 01:49 PM | No, since a thief neesd only a +20 modifer to his skill. When he takes 20 he will still open the lock in less than two minutes. If push comes to shove, then it might be a problem for lower level and lwoer-mid level thieves. But when you consider the fact that only really, really rich nobles would be able to afford such locks, the reqards of the effort will probably be worth it. |
| JoAT02-23-04, 02:11 PM | Those amazing quality locks are designed for use under the complex skills checks, though - you can take ten, but you can't take twenty.... This definetly sounds like a sound candidate for a knock spell. |
| Alaina02-23-04, 02:20 PM | hmm. so you'd need a +30. but just 'spose whats the minimal level could said rogue get a +20 on an OL check anyways? other than maybe two knocks, which might be the point of the thing. i just thought the lock was pretty under-priced considering. |
| strenoth02-23-04, 03:12 PM | but think what it would take to open it with a set of keys... what a pain.. ;) |
| bolobaby02-23-04, 04:06 PM | OK... the real answer here is for the thief to seek out the Merovingian and to kidnap the Keymaker from him. I wouldn't do it any other way. :D |
| Ogre4Hire02-23-04, 06:03 PM | Of course, there's always the Ogre method: If brute force isn't solving the problem, you aren't using enough!:D |
| Count Arioch the 28th02-23-04, 06:23 PM | Yep. Power attack is great for breaking doors. (If you take a round to aim, you auto-hit. Putting your entire BaB into damage will help a lot.) Also, an adamantine dagger will cut through almost anything in a matter of rounds, plus it's not too expensive. (An adamantine greataxe, with power attack, will cut through quicker, obviously.) Those amazing locks are okay, but not insurmountable. |
| Thelon Fairblade03-01-04, 01:42 PM | +30 OL 5 from dex 13 from skill points 5 from magic item +2 morale bonus from minor item or bard +2 (enhancement to dex) from Cat's Grace = +27 at 10th level Add 2 levels for an additional 2 skp and probably +1 from +6 dex increase item (voids cat's grace). So a 12th level thief (10th, with Skill Focus OL)could open the Amazing lock with a Take 10. Or the Wiz4 or Sorc4 could do it with a pair of Knock Spells. Remember, though, that most people don't have 100 gp just to spend on a lock! And those that do are more worried about the magical defenses the lock needs... Also, most theives IMC have found that slicing off the *back* of the chest is easier and safer than going in through the lock or the lid... |
