Improved Concentration Prerequisites: Concentration 4 ranks Benefit: Any action that provokes an attack of opportunity may be performed defensively using the Concentration skill (except for regular movement, which provokes attacks of opportunity as normal). Normal: Only casting a spell, using a spell-like ability, or using a skill can be performed defensively. Special: May be chosen as a monk bonus feat at 1st, 2nd, or 6th level. |
| tos_shai_hulud04-07-08, 08:44 AM | The idea behind this feat is that with a concentration check, special attacks like Grapple, Trip attempts, Disarm attempts, Sunder attempts, Bull rush attempts, Overrun attempts, etc. may be tried with the use of the Concentration skill. It requires no feat to attempt, but failing the concentration check means that the attack fails. I guess I am wondering if it is too powerful to allow a monk the ability to perform just about any special attack with one feat, never provoking attacks of opportunity so long as he succeeds on concentration checks. |
| Senevri04-07-08, 09:53 AM | How does this interact with, oh, getting up from prone etc. If you want to restrict it to trip, grapple etc. mention it in the feat, specifically. It's half of what Improved X feats do. What would be the DC of the concentration check, BTW? |
| tos_shai_hulud04-07-08, 10:12 AM | As it says, it extends using abilities defensively to any action that would provoke an attack of opportunity. The DC for using an ability defensively is set in the PHB at 15. Yes, it would include getting up from prone, etc. The only thing that is not included is normal movement. |
| sblaxman04-11-08, 12:07 PM | flavor wise it's not shabby.... I'd have to sit down and do some math to see if it would actually be balanced or not. You'd basically be moving a bunch of feats (improved bullrush/grapple/etc) into a skill, but at the same time forcing the monk to use his skill points to max out that skill if he wants to use it. It may work out, but i can't say for sure. It would force the monk to but skill points into a skill he normally would not use so it would take away from his other skills, but if he has a high int this might not hurt him. |
| Rhialto04-11-08, 12:25 PM | It doesn't make sense to me. Concentration is about avoiding distractions to complete a mentally-focused act, not a physically-ficused act. |
| Wih04-14-08, 01:26 AM | Perhaps make the DC of the Concentration Check equal to the opponent's Attack Roll (from the AoO) +5. The feat as you have written doens't have a DC listed for the concentration check needed to make it defensively. |

The feat as you have written doens't have a DC listed for the concentration check needed to make it defensively. That might be a worthwhile addition to the feat, or perhaps instead, it would be a DC 15+(attack bonus of attacker)? That way, it will likely always be a difficult check to make. |
