The text in Unearthed Arcana says you do not need the item creation feats to improve an Item Familiar. But do you need the spells?

If I recall correctly, all you need is the gold to burn ;)

Yeah, i've seen that answer before, but that confuses me, because all it does is say that you don't need the craft feats, but makes no mention of not having to have the spells. The way I see it, you need someone else to cast the spells if you're say...a Fighter. Yet i've seen that answer before, that you don't need to have the spells, but is that really supported by the passage about improving Item Familiars?

item familiar = a familiar that works...

Regular familiars are totally useless with the risk of taking an XP hit.... item familiars circumvent it, they also give it to ALL classes instead of just caster, require no feats to create, etc etc... bunch of BS if you ask me, and I would not allow any such BS in any of my games. Everything is possible, as long as you are willing to pay the cost (so if you really want an item familiar, it will be HARDER to get then a regular familiar, and will cost you more for its extra benefits)

No offense, but that didn't even answer my question at all...

Maybe I should change the title of the thread, too many people probably think this is a question about how investing skill ranks or spells work :(
